I don't see why "free" food and drink, beyond water, has to be provided in basic fare. It just adds a layer of cost.
If you want food service, pay for it.
Last time I flew through Madrid, beyond security, there was a Burger King (a bit more expensive than regular), a bunch of other deli and coffe places where you could get sandwiches, baguettes, etc, water fountains to refill your bottle all over the place, and a bunch of vending machines with sandwiches and snacks.
Makes sense to me.
