  • I found sinking more time into Japanese seemed to be more rewarding than just sinking into Spanish.

I'm with you there for sure. To me I think a lot of it is falling into the intermediate slump for ES, where really progressing starts to take a lot more. But also Japanese just has a lot of very different aspects that benefit a lot from memorization and study.

Not sure what else would be a reading goal for now

Those sound like good goals! Going back to any favorite books is a good call.

I'd like to eventually be able to read complex, native adult-targeted literature in original language. Stuff like your Murakamis and Muratas I guess. But for now I'm only at graded readers for JP and young adult level stuff for ES. I'll try to keep it kinda fluid and follow what's interesting as it catches me.

  • Project M and Brawl Minus were a ton of fun!

They're Smash Brawl fan mods where the game gets totally reworked. The former makes it like Melee, while the latter makes everything ridiculous.

There are others too that I haven't spent the time with. Melee itself has a mod with a few new chars, and Smash 64 has an extensive remix.

  • Mostly digging through past albums of bands I already like. My music taste has largely fossilized. And I realize that the artists I claim to enjoy, I've rarely explored their whole discography. So I try to do that. And when I feel like I've exhausted favorites, there are plenty of not-quite-favorites to give a deeper look at.

So I'm not looking for new groups too often. But when I am, these resources are useful:

  • Great questions, thanks for bringing up the discussion.

Japanese - I wanted to learn this since I was a kid, for typical cultural-export-enjoyment reasons. For many years, I casually entertained interest in learning, but never dedicated much to it until recently. It was always that thing I'd love to learn some day.

In the past few years I've dug into Remembering the Kanji and gotten into Anki in general. It's helped create something persistent. I've got all sorts of resources lined up, but I'm undisciplined in consistency.

My level is still pretty low, overall. Could probably call myself advanced beginner (N4ish), but that'd be a stretch. Long way to go. This is a hard language!

My goal is to be able to consume Japanese internet (web pages and videos), games, books, and tv without it taking huge effort. Ideally, I basically want to switch any 'content consumption' or 'information gathering' tasks I normally do in English to Japanese.

If I were younger, I'd probably think about a goal of moving there, but as it stands I believe I'm too rooted where I am. I hope to visit there at some point soonish. But from what I hear most people speak English well, so knowing the language won't be a necessity for that.

Spanish - I studied this all though school. Found the classes fun and easy. Being in the US, you encounter the language a decent amount. And nice perks like having radio stations or documents available in it.

Growing up, I thought it would be useful to know since it's the second most spoken language in the region. In practice, not that much. I rarely talk to many people anyway, but I especially always feel like I'll insult a Spanish speaker by speaking Spanish. Like I might come off as thinking they don't know English.

My level is probably about B2/C1 (vibe guess). I can hold basic conversations and read pretty well. But long tail vocab and listening speed are weak.

Goals, I think I'm good on. I've travelled and had real conversations with people that don't speak English, and I've read multiple (paper) novels through. I'd love to be better and able to say I'm fluent, but I'm content here. Would rather focus on Japanese going forward.

  • but the problem I’m facing is I end up enjoying my time so much when studying Japanese, I end up doing more, then the same with Spanish, then the same with Irish.

Good problem to have! I know there are many things you want to do and time is finite, but it's great to hear you're really enjoying the studies.

  • Inspiring stuff! Love to see how you've been both dedicated and also adaptable.

October 2025: I learn of a trade show in Germany scheduled in May that’s relevant to my professional career. This is my inspiration moment. I want to learn German so that I can comfortably visit Germany.

May is pretty soon. Are you going to try and attend the trade show this year? Curious if that was/is your goal.

I read through all of my Basic German grammar book (Its only 200 pages and I skipped the exercises. I just wanted an overview).

I think this is an under-rated step in the process. The first impulse (at least mine was,) is to try and learn each thing as you come to it. But better to go ahead and get some familiarity with most of the grammar concepts. You'll at least see/hear them and kinda sorta get sense of what's going on.

  • So glad they don't. A lot of modern layouts would do well to change to something simpler.

  • There's a certain strain of thought that runs through my mind sometimes, that space is just too big and too empty to really be worth going into. Like the moon and Mars, maybe a couple other in-system planets, are the only things close enough for realistic human trips in lifetimes. And the trips so far have shown us that yes, those are just big balls of monotonous dirt. You ever kinda landed in that state of mind?

In spite of all that, I do still get excited about it, and really enjoyed following Artemis. Excited to see us (maybe, hopefully) land on the moon again soon. It's remarkable that humans are able to rise to that challenge, and I hope we don't ever entirely stop.

  • They didn't entirely miss the mark there. They publicly released the version after that and the world became worse. That certainly fits for some definition of 'dangerous', even tho it's probably not how they were thinking.

  • Pretty crazy, since they were already known for being slow. It's never bothered me, but ordering from them isn't great if you're in a hurry.

  • A friend of mine was telling me about this game the other day. I'm not a car guy, but driving around Japan does sound kinda fun. I'm out on the Xbox Series tho and doubt my PC could run it.

There's gotta be plenty of other games set in a semi-realistic Japan, right? I'd be curious to hear recs, racing or not.

  • For sure! Something about making it more organized little by little is super satisfying, theraputic even.

  • It's so ingrained in conversational habits. I find myself really struggling for a greeting when I visit someone who I know is struggling or in pain. Like, I don't want to force them to think about how they're doing. But then I also don't know what else goes after that initial "Hey". v_v

  • I think there's definitely something to this. Kinda like a cache, it's nice to have some pages that you know are interesting or useful in someway that you can find that little bit easier.

But the in-browser search for bookmarks is pretty limited. It just checks the title and url and maybe some tags. I know (or think?) there are some programs out there that index and/or archive your bookmarks and let you do full text search through them like a proper search engine.

  • Apparently 4614. Several hundred are probably duplicates tho. I'll bookmark interesting pages that I see at work (since I usually don't have time to read them) and occasionally import them to my main browser. Like others have said, that's built up over many years. And in general I've tried to be more of a 'bookmark it and close the tab already' kind of person lately.

It's all various levels of hoarding and to-dos I know I'll never get to, but pretty often I do find myself enjoying browsing through my bookmarks and remembering neat stuff I saw in passing or articles I wanted to read. It's also fun sorting them out to folders, even tho I know they'll never be properly organized nor especially useful if they were.

I do very regularly use a few that I keep on my bookmarks toolbar. I make better use of that feature at work too, where I have the most important few pages and environments right at hand.

  • The premise doesn't feel true for me. I'm in the US - Verne and Wells both seem well known generally. But that's highly anecdotal of course.

  • But yeah, in general I don't have a great answer. It surprises me that I don't know of any prominent websites that openly share general tabs and lead sheets and don't suck.

  • Freetar is an alternative frontend for UltimateGuitar. It cool that it's not so annoying. But the mobile experience can be worse than UG w/ adblock, so it doesn't really solve that problem.
