  • Mr Dowling said he had a banner with the words: "From the River to the Sea-

    "OOO he said it again!"

  • I wonder if the name and concept are inspired by the improv comedy Thank God You're Here, which I notice had an international version in the UK among many other countries.

  • From Wikipedia:

The Green Institute is an Australian public policy think tank founded in 2008. The institute "supports green politics through education, action, research and debate".

In disclosure returns lodged with the Australian Electoral Commission, the institute indicated that it is an associated entity of the Australian Greens. The institute is similar to the Liberal Party aligned Menzies Research Centre and Labor's Chifley Research Centre.

Forming a "mass movement" approach would be an interesting shift for an institute affiliated with The Greens.

  • Yeah, that's an excellent point. I couldn't easily find official details about pay changes or hours.

  • I remember someone online somewhere complaining about oat milk companies tricking people into buying overpriced gruel and for some reason it really stuck with me.

  • Many countries in the Asia Pacific region rely on fuel that travels through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has blocked for the past month after US strikes on the country. International Energy Agency director Fatih Birol described the resulting global fuel shortage as the worse than the previous Gulf wars and Russia's war on Ukraine combined.

To conserve resources, government workers in the Philippines have moved to a four-day work week, while Sri Lanka has declared each Wednesday a public holiday.

I missed this news, excellent job making a four-day work week happen, island-friends!

This seems like a golden opportunity to win the four-day week, and even if one sector like this manages to get a foot in the door, it opens up the potential for others. So far, all I can find are a few trials, around 20 small companies in total.

  • I’m not resistant to AI or LLMs.

Surely you can understand why people assume you are, when you say unnuanced lines like: "AI is fascism. full stop." , "with AI, all roads lead to fascism."

  • From news.com.au coverage of political reactions:

Greens senator David Shoebridge posted a screenshot of an article about the arrests, and wrote: “Good.”

  • For anyone unfamiliar with the NSN, a child-grooming cult, many of Tom Tanuki's YouTube videos provide solid overviews of them and their close associates.

  • I know this is a very obvious headline to most people here, although I think it's still worth publishing as there is a common pro-car talking point about rural areas being locked into personal vehicles. So improving the balance there is important too, showing that even in rural places there are benefits to improving 'walkability' of towns.

  • Posting in Australian News as it's obviously not just going to be a NSW-only effort.

Yes, it's obviously the "former" NSN continuing under a new organisation. Let's see if the government can adjust their aim in time to nip this public effort in the bud.

Their specific emphasis on their Youth Club, officially aimed at 15-18 year olds, is not novel but nonetheless disturbing.

  • They put a bit of the summary into the title (which helps), I'm guessing maybe they weren't aware that Lemmy allows link posts to have text too.

Is there anyone here who will [spend] time watching it?

I opened it before reading the comments. But I am already familiar with Punter.

  • Closer than my guess. I thought they were going to announce that anyone caught hoarding fuel will have it poured on them.

  • I just made throwaways, subscribed to marriage memes and real estate pages. Seemed to have worked.

  • Kids these days are getting pretty smart!

  • We haven’t had a recession in decades

On 2 September 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia officially went into recession (defined as two quarters of negative growth) with GDP falling 7% in the June 2020 quarter, the largest drop on record. GDP fell 0.3% in the March quarter. [Wikipedia]

  • If it was a private conversation, I'd agree completely.

Since this is a public forum, and because of how this kind of forum works*, it's useful to refute these platitudes and flawed arguments because there are other people reading. The point isn't to change Seagoon's mind - I've seen their posts long enough to know they're unlikely to read anything in good faith, it wouldn't be worth our time at all.

    * I say 'how this kind of forum works', because in some other situations, replying can give pointless attention or legitimacy to bullshit. But I don't think that's an issue here.

  • AI is absolutely being used as a pretext to cut jobs. They'll axe 1000, say "oh whoops that was a mistake" and hire 500 back.
