  • Might need to start calling them Child Labor party

  • My first employer didn't keep track of my birthday, so I got about a thousand in backpay and never got another shift.

I didn't realise it went up to 21, I thought it was just 18.

  • Last year, there were a few rallies under the banner of March for Australia, attracting a few thousands including some mainstream right-wing politicians (including PHON, Katter, Libertarian). While it was obvious to anyone paying attention that this was being organised by white supremacists (primarily Hugo 'auspill' Lennon, who is the son of a huge property investor, and 'Bec Freedom', a white supremacist who poorly tries to downplay it as 'Aussie values', both affiliated with the former NSN), it was only after the first rally that most attendees realised it was, in fact, being run to platform self-declared neo-Nazis. The following MFA rallies dropped attendance by 85% - it is now unambiguously a white supremacist organisation with the NSN at its core.

Last year, the NSN pulled a media stunt where they booed at ANZAC dawn services during the Welcome to Country, which as shown by chat logs in the video, is done by the group for explicitly white-supremacist reasons. However, due to recent laws, the NSN have officially disbanded to avoid prosecution, but are obviously still an organised group.

This year, the Fight for Australia (Lennon wouldn't let Bec Freedom have the March for Australia accounts, so they rebranded) tried to create a campaign to do this stunt again.

That should give you enough context to watch the video.

  • I feel like all the reporting on this is just giving them the publicity they want.

Speaking generally about the mainstream reporting, sure. These stunts, as per their own manuals, are done to use the mainstream media to advertise and legitimise themselves.

But that doesn't apply to the attached video. I mean no disrespect with this question, but did you watch it? And if so, how do you think it affects these groups?

There are important reasons to report on these groups and their stunts, and there are ethical ways to do it considerately and constructively: https://thewhiterosesociety.writeas.com/9-principles-for-journalists-reporting-on-neo-nazis

  • I have not read about WMD. I’ll do that now I guess

Sorry for assuming and for my attitude, I guess I'm in a bit of a media bubble and assumed it was still well-known worldwide. It's a large reason why the Iraq War faced huge counterprotests in my country. Long story short, a main part of the pretense for the Iraq War was the US saying that Iraq was building "Weapons of Mass Destruction". Before the invasion, the CIA told the US government that the gov's intel was not reliable, and the UN couldn't find any evidence of them since the disarmament in the 90s. [wikipedia]

The reason I mention that, is because this isn't the first time the US has used this pretense of weapons building to justify an invasion, and combined with the fact that Netanyahu has been claiming repeatedly for decades that Iran is close to completing them, the claim doesn't sound trustworthy.

  • Well Iran is building nuclear bombs.

And they've been very close to finishing for *checks notes* the last 30 years. I'm sure you're old enough to have heard the "WMDs" and "bringing freedom" excuses before.

Neither of those factors are a rationale for either Israel or the USA, who both possess nuclear weapons, and who have convicted war criminal leaders and anti-democratic leaders respectively, to intervene. Neither have high-ground over any dictatorship. Yes, this war is an adventure of the Zionist Regime in Palestine and the United States of America.

  • haha, some neo-nazis are pathetically whining at police in Perth for removing them before they could boo, saying they totally weren't going to interrupt anything. No-one's buying their bad-faith pleads this time.

There was still some heckling in Perth, but watching the March for Australia fash play the victim like this is just funny. Their own supporters get to watch them cowardly pretend "no mr officer we weren't going to do anything" instead of moving on with (feigned) dignity.

  • Linking the Boy Boy video reacting to finfluencers, for a laugh.

I wonder how much it costs to pretend to be rich (without taking out huge loans). Things like renting expensive clothes, cars and locations for a few hours, LARPing and then leaving.

  • I've said it before, and I'll say it again and again: the word "influencer" is one of the shadiest things I can think of, and it's amazing how numb people are to it. "Wow, that's my favourite manipulator! I watch that deceiver all the time <3 "

  • Luckily I haven't been exposed to much of that behaviour on my local instance. Which instances/communities are you finding all these jerks at? (I've blocked a couple for unrelated reasons so maybe I'm not seeing them.)

  • There's also some element that "alternative sites" tend to accumulate the people banned from the primary site. Luckily the strong left-leaning initial crowd kept most of the bigotry at bay during the formative years, but I really dislike that in general-purpose instances, many have failed to create much original culture distinct from reddit. Lemmy isn't reddit, and that can be a good thing.

  • Real-space example: a women's-only art installation/lounge. It was only a matter of time before it went to court. I think at one point they (perhaps jokingly) proposed converting it to a bathroom to allow legal discrimination. (and that still wouldn't be the smelliest exhibition in Mona)

  • and could have said she supports trump [...]

    Senator Trump, that is

But I agree, to a degree, that some basic footnotes would strengthen this propaganda. Someone online could simply say "there are no sources!" to inoculate others to it.

  • I'll also say that I really like that they've used Sky News footage in the ad. Smart choice to use sources that plenty of PHON voters are primed to trust more than others.

  • the campaign website WhoisHanson.com

It really bugs me that there are zero (0) links to evidence on that page, and I don't think we can just assume all their potential audience doesn't care either (as tempting as it is to assume that)

  • I have no doubt that various groups in various governments would like nothing better than to get rid of cash for surveillance reasons.

Yes, not to mention corporate groups too (banks, online purchasing, loyalty cards, ... ).

  • Perhaps not the best example but one to start joggin' the noggin: it can be a weak point to start an attack your local network, if someone is adjacent (like standing in range of your WiFi). Obviously not a likely scenario to most people reading, especially since HTTPS became normalised, but a reason to keep security in the discussion for local home networks.

  • Nearly three in five Australians (59.1 per cent) believe life was better 50 years ago.

Interestingly, a bit less than 40% of Australians were alive 50 years ago. It's just begging for the historical-revisionist pseudo-nostalgia that conservatives have been churning out for decades - what does a 30 year old really know about how life was 50 years ago?
