  • I voted for Corbyn as leader twice.

We have a stupid af electoral system, the popular vote doesn't matter, it's breadth you need. Blair got 418 seats from 13.5m votes, May got 317 from 13.6m, and Johnson got 365 from 13.9m. Then Starmer somehow gets 411 from 9.7m because, again, the system is fucking dumb, but you need to work within it (so you can then change it).

Corbyn's popularity was very concentrated, and he was marmite. Yes, he got the most votes for a Labour leader since Blair, but he also motivated the opposition vote too. The main thing May's 2017 campaign promised was a dementia tax, which was hated, and yet she still got more votes than Blair.

His platform - especially 2017 - was great. But the only measure that matters for the leader of a main political party is election results. You can only make changes if you're in power.

What's somewhat ironic is how much of that platform has now been put in place by Starmer; nationalised rail, a ban on fracking, 30 hours of free childcare, end 0hrs contracts, putting VAT on private schools fees, removing two child limit.

  • Funny how despite great interest among the population that got shot down…

    Literally lost two elections.

Popular on twitter != electorally viable.

  • There are no easy or quick solutions. It took 45 years of smashing shit up for neo-libs to get us to this point. It'll take a fuck load longer than 2 years to fix it. This is why pyschcodrama is pointless, and changing who is PM does not change the material conditions we currently exist in.

I support a wealth tax, but an extra 30-ish billion in tax revenue isn't going to touch the sides when we spend around 1,200 billion a year; it's less than 3%. The benefit of a wealth tax is longer term.

Meaningful spending will either require massive borrowing - which increases interest rates and worsens wealth inequality as its the rich who loan the money in the first place - or printing money, which increases inflation, and worsens inequality.

Right now we're relatively insulated from Trump's FAFO with Iran due to the energy price cap, etc, but people are already shitting their pants at how petrol prices have increased, whilst other countries are already rationing.

People are so (rightfully) jaded, and there is no appetite in the country for "pain today for a better tomorrow".

This is a hard problem to fix, and is much bigger than whoever the PM is.

  • Let me get this straight.

Trump is saying he'll make US citizens pay more in the US, because the UK are making US companies pay more tax in the UK?

    Cool, go nuts!

  • Statue of Anne gang! Avast ye!

  • So you're just skipping the whole civil war and the 1920s?

  • With this level of knowledge of Irish history, I can only assume that whoever made this is a proud Irish American.

  • Shocked.

  • Populists gonna popul.

  • I know nothing about Hungary's view on Trump, but I really really struggle to see how this public an endorsement will turn out more loyalists than it motivates the opposition.

Proper poison chalice, at least, we can hope.

  • Oh totally, it's ridiculous, but that's the sort of person parties attract if they only pursue simple answers.

  • Good.

By all means pass resolutions on Bibi committing war crimes and that he and his cronies should be tried in the Hague. Denounce in the strongest terms the murder of innocents.

But any third country - and especially the UK - advocating for any singular state not achieved through a peaceful democratic mandate is an utterly batshit position for any party to take.

Peace can only come from when Israeli and Palestinian people see through the poison being fed to them, and unite against their 'leaders'.

  • Antisemitic false flag conspiracies, in a populist party? Surely not.

  • 6.9

    Hmmmm.

  • Can I watch?

  • Don't kink shame.

  • I should call her.

  • Wtf, I guess I hate the gays now?

  • Hell Yeah!
