  • Impressive! Yeah micro soldering makes me sweaty and frustrated 😬

  • This is the way

  • I was gonna complain about my $4k bill for a heart checkup, but uh.. you win.

  • Excellent read, highly recommend.

The sequel was a bit meh, but required reading I'd say

  • I'm not OP. But I think I share his sentiment.

You obviously know a lot about this stuff, I do not.

I'm excited for FEX, because even though some games can technically be played on arm right now, and even though you say it's easy to convert (I have no idea), the fact is nobody is doing it 🤷‍♂️

I understand Valve did a lot of work to make gaming not only possible on Linux, but in some cases preferable.

From a layman's non-software-developer perspective, regardless of how much actual effort is required by Valve... I hope that FEX will shift the industry as aggressively as proton did. I hope that gaming on arm becomes no big deal, easy to do with a click, and preferable in some cases. Whereas right now, it's not that easy or performant, as I understand.

    So I guess.. I'm just excited, that's all 🤷‍♂️

  • Delta-P

  • Same. And even further, I kept a spare with me for awhile. And I bought a giant tumor battery and modified back cover to make it slick. Worked great.

That was my Galaxy Note, the OG. I miss that phone. People would stop me to ask about it because it was so big.

  • This is basically me. Got my 13 least year. I won't be upgrading until I'm forced to, most likely. When I do it'll be those components first. Though I do covet the touchscreen, I don't actually need it

  • That's fair, and probably true in her case honestly.

  • Not op, but the world isn't black and white. I definitely know people like they are describing. Perfectly healthy, mentally and physically, yet neet and unapologetic.

One guy actually recently got a job and a wife and an apartments, so good on him. Though he still struggles because his wife is neet, though she claims a dubious disability.

I also know some people as you describe, with different actual disabilities, and neet. It's sad, but that's life.

There's a lot of people in the world, and they exist all over the spectrum.

  • Yeah I love my AMD FW 13 too. I'm not gonna upgrade right away, personally. Very compelling, but so is my current hardware. I'm probably gonna hang tight for awhile.

Maybe upgrade the touchpad if the price is right. The touchscreen is something I wished it had last year when I bought in, but unless mine breaks I can't justify the cost.

  • I looked into it, but I didn't want to mess with rpmostree anymore than I need to, since I'm on bluefin. I'm really digging the forced stability.

  • This, so much this. I also run Fedora.

I can't just close the lid and put it in my bag without worrying.

Honestly, most times of I'm not actively working on something, I just shut it off completely before packing it away. It starts plenty fast, and at least I know I'll actually have battery when I need it. Instead of finding it dead or at 10%. So annoying.

  • You shouldn't buy based on promises or assumptions. But if I had to guess, I'd say an OLED panel may come eventually. And it would likely be backwards compatible.

Original FW13 owners already had the original glossy panel, then the new matte higher resolution panel came out as a drop in replacement, and now this new touch panel is also a drop in replacement.

I already have a FW13 with the matte high res panel, I won't be going to touch panel. But maybe if they do an OLED I'd jump to it.

My plan is not to upgrade unless I need to. If something breaks, it'll get the newest version of whatever that thing is.

Unless I feel hampered by my 7040u in 3 or 4 years, then maybe I'll do something about it? But I really don't need that much horsepower in my life.

I'm just glad I have the option. And happy to support a company giving me the option.

  • Thanks!

  • Define beefy? Like 8 to 12gb vram? Or will an old 970 do the trick?

  • I have not been using community scripts, and I feel an amount of silly. Thanks!

  • Any suggestions for someone tech savvy enough to run a proxmox server for a handful of services, to get started with home assistant?

Can you replicate something like a Google home with voice commands?

I may or may not be getting a new house soon. I'm good with electrical to replace switches with wireless ones. But what do you get? Where do you start and where do you end? What about the WAF?

I saw LTT did smart switches in his house and it was a mess of incompatibilities.

Any good resources? I don't even know what I don't know haha

  • Oh I'm definitely in the slow category, according to the cars behind me.

Don't get me wrong, I do the speed limit, and heck still sometimes the appropriate "5 over" if there's cars behind me.

But that's not enough for most people, they race around me anyway.

But more than just not speeding up when I see the red light, I watch the light from farther away. It's very flat here, and if you pay attention you can see the light turning from 10 or 20 seconds away, and adjust appropriately. You can even time the light to know it'll turn red before you get there.

I'm not counting seconds or anything, it's more of a vibe check. "That light has been green a looong time, it's definitely turning red before I get there."

So depending on who's behind me and ahead of me and how far away I am, I'll either start coasting down to maybe 5 or 10 under as I approach, that way I can use my brakes even less.

I get pretty good at it with the lights on my way to work. But some lights are un-timable. Their timing is almost purposely designed to waste gas.

And one stretch of lights changes depending on time of day to create a unidirectional flow of traffic. You'll hit every green going south at 3pm, but every red going north. Stuff like that.

Using brakes is wasted gas, lost efficiency. I get a whole 5 or 6 more mpg driving my wife's car, than when she drives it. Maybe more. Every time I drive it I watch the average tick up. For her it hovers around 25/26. I've seen over 31 in the same car.

Again I'm not the guy who painfully slowly accelerates, angering everyone. I know how to stand on the pedal when I need to. I just pay attention, and accelerate and brake maybe a little more smoothly.

  • What is this thing? @lemmy.world

What is this pair of metal... Things.. hanging on traffic light pole over an intersection?

I'm not a bumper sticker person. I bought Linux stickers for my laptop, decided it was too much like a bumper sticker, didn't use them. But my routers? Somehow feels appropriate 😁

  • Amtrak @lemmy.world

Update! Help me plan a train trip? Chicago to... Somewhere out West. Taking the California zephyr first. I've got an $800 voucher that expires in two weeks, I need to book ASAP. Thinking rail pass!

    Router as tiny server?

  • OpenWrt @lemdro.id

I read that not all routers support VLANs, but I can't tell if mine does or not. I'm extremely new to VLANs and openwrt in general. Can someone give me a touch of guidance?
