  • Can you link the posts about dbzer0 wanting to defederate feddit.org? I must have missed this situation.

I am assuming they didn't end up going through with it at least

  • Damn, I should have gone with this one. I can't think of many things I associate more with the 2000s than Basshunter. The lyrics of the original Swedish songs are so infinitely better than the English remakes too.

Can't forget this one either. OG DOTA and IRC chatrooms, what a time to be alive

  • Instances is fine but I always thought calling them servers was the most pragmatic choice. Many people already understand the general concept of servers so it seems to be less confusing/overwhelming to newcomers. Lemmies is fun though, and it's really just an abbreviation for "Lemmy instance", so I feel like it's not even wrong.

  • Whether tis nobler to risk the splashback, or to live with your poop perpetually ending up on a shelf? In many ways, this is a microcosm of the human condition.

  • Very cool site, great work!

  • FYI the gif isn't displaying in your comment. I pulled it up by viewing the comment source text and pasting the URL, but it isn't embedding properly.

I think maybe because it's a gif? You might only be able to embed still images iirc

But I didn't know that word until I just looked it up right now so it feels weird to be correcting your spelling 😅

And yes I agree, free verse is lame, meter and rhyming ftw!

  • Censorship is always going to exist to some extent, but Lemmy has the potential to balance it out because there is no central authority. So you could have censorship of different stuff on different servers, but if you take the network as a whole you would still get a diversity of information.

I remember everybody celebrating Luigi the whole time, I guess some mods and admins were wary of threats of violence being hosted on their servers but overall it's impossible to criticize Luigi on this platform without getting heavily downvoted, and celebrating him is free upvotes.

So I feel like you're being pretty overdramatic and also not really accurate with this comment.

  • Logically it's pretty easy to demonstrate that you can. You could simply let someone experience a work of art, and never reveal any information about the creator. Boom, that person can experience the art completely independently of who the creator is, because they simply don't have any information about the creator. In fact, that's more or less how most people have experienced art for the majority of human history up until the past few generations.

  • I wonder if there's a way to apply this pattern to create some specific kind of cellular automaton.

Honestly idk enough about this stuff to even know if that's a dumb question, but at the very least, the image reminded me of that.

  • Basically there were a lot of lawsuits going back and forth in the pre-production that ultimately resulted in Guillermo Del Toro leaving the as director after nearly two years of planning and developing the films according to his vision. Then Peter Jackson had to step in as director with minimal preparation time and he essentially winged the whole thing. It was originally planned as two films but was expanded to three at the last minute. They were also using all sorts of cutting edge technology in the filming process and the sheer scale of the films would have been daunting enough even with adequate time to prepare.

    As per Jackson

Because Guillermo del Toro had to leave and I jumped in and took over, we didn't wind the clock back a year and a half and give me a year and a half prep to design the movie, which was different to what he was doing. It was impossible, and as a result of it being impossible I just started shooting the movie with most of it not prepped at all. You're going on to a set and you're winging it, you've got these massively complicated scenes, no storyboards and you're making it up there and then on the spot. I spent most of The Hobbit feeling like I was not on top of it. Even from a script point of view, Fran [Walsh], Philippa [Boyens] and I hadn't got the entire scripts written to our satisfaction, so that was a very high pressure situation

You can read a slightly more detailed explanation in the wikipedia article.
