I'm a nerd who enjoys playing Video Games, watching アニメ (Anime) and tinkering with things that probably shouldn't be tinkered with 🤔

📍British Columbia, Canada

  • Not here to start a debate but I feel you on the Systemd thing. I don’t really understand why all the hate.

Also I literally JUST purchased a clear umbrella from Family Mart last night… are they really so poorly made that they break easy?! I was hoping to get more than “a few uses” out of it 😰

  • What a subtle detail... I'm actually disappointed in myself for not noticing this before:

Their online book store is way more expensive than the competition, but if that's the cost of supporting some fellow Canadians, I'll gladly sacrifice my capital. 🫡

  • I was actually curious about the same thing but I guess while they're owned by a Japanese conglomerate, they were/are Canadian based? From their Wikipedia page:

Rakuten Kobo Inc., or simply Kobo, is a Canadian company that sells ebooks, audiobooks, e-readers and formerly tablet computers. It is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is a subsidiary of the Japanese e-commerce conglomerate Rakuten. The name Kobo is an anagram of book.

  • It appears as though it is...

But saying it pings their servers isn't quite a fair statement as it's not some background service that opens a network connection, it sounds to me at least like it's data that is sent to the Fedora repos once a week when you update your system?

Clients (DNF, PackageKit, …) have been modified so they add a countme variable in their requests to mirrors.fedoraproject.org once a week. This ends up in our webserver log data which lets us generate usage statistics.

Would be glad to be corrected on this though as I am a long time Fedora user now and I'm not overly fond of my data being collected by big corpo; it's why I left Windows in the first place 🙄

  • Have you seen 16bit Sensation: Another Layer? It's not the most Anime Otaku thing but if you're into Tech Otaku stuff then what about PC-98?

Also just out of curiosity, where in the world has four digit license plates? Is it for a car or motorcycle or some other kind of vehicle?

  • I’m genuinely curious about this too. I’ve found Fedora to be such a nice OS to use, I’d be devastated if big blue’s corpo greed destroys it.

  • Where does it say new product? I read their announcement and get the impression that it’s an update to an existing product:

“We’ve got one more big update for you, and you can tune into our YouTube channel August 26th at 8am PT to see what it is!”

  • Actually I disagree. Using a Steam Deck docked in desktop mode I was able to run out of memory by playing Minecraft while having one browser tab open (YouTube) and Discord.

I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but you have to keep in mind that the SteamDeck's 16GB of LPDDR5 is both VRAM and system memory and the Steam Deck dynamically allocates it based on need.

And that's before we even consider doing something wacky like using the Steam Deck for Dev work or 3D modeling or other more "normal computer" uses.

  • Would you look at that - the pipeline is green now! Quick everybody, merge your stuff while it's stable (/s) (sadly a true story tho)

  • Bold of you to assume that the line can’t go up further… just think of all those poor shareholders missing out on an even higher value! 😩

  • Isn’t 6.9% unemployment still really high? 😬

  • Valve has been moving slow and steady, but it seems like a master plan for Steam Machines could finally be coming into focus.

Honestly if Valve launched a new Steam Machine today, I’d buy it in an instant.

  • So the author of the blog post that the article is based off of actually interacted with some comments over on Hacker News and there were some pretty interesting revelations - such as his resume having Vibecoding as the first skill listed on it and living/looking for jobs on the East Coast with a website sounding like he's on the West Coast among other things.

I guess the media saw his blog post as a quick means of driving clicks through a clickbait headline. That's not to say that the market isn't hot trash at the moment, but I personally doubt Engineers are being replaced by AI.

  • Hey uh... I don't think the Pixiv Source is pointing to the right place? The Pixiv post you linked does not contain this artwork from what I saw. Additionally, when I go to the profile from the linked Pixiv post and click on their twitter, it also links to a different twitter.

OP I think your Twitter/Tumblr sources are correct but the Pixiv one I'd give another look 😅

  • Various messages in the ongoing “Canada Invasion” Signal thread include: • plans to invade Vancouver and Toronto simultaneously, “because they’re right next to each other” • a refusal to include Danielle Smith in the text chain due to the Alberta Premier “being too pick-me”

    I’m howling 🤣🤣🤣

  • I laughed way too hard at this. God damn the Beaverton is just on fire these days...

  • Honestly the Boycott had me going to my local bakery, butcher and farmers market. In some ways it’s surprisingly cheaper and in some ways it’s a little (and I mean little) bit more expensive but knowing that my money is going to my local community / farmers is 100,000% worth it. Haven’t had to go back since.

So I really feel you on that; nok er nok

  • Hell no - I stopped shopping at Loblaws since the boycott and I haven’t missed Shoppers Drug Mart one bit. I know that Shoppers is only one component of this health care empire but if it’s any indication, I won’t be needing anything else from Per Bank either. 🫡🫡🫡
