  • you win the internet today

  • was listening to a podcast last year where they talked about the projections the year before of who would be best for carbon emissions, Kamala Harris or Trump, and it was basically a tie. I didn't realise the benefit to Pakistan (and Australia, where we basically got solar panels for free for the last few years thanks to government incentives too), was largely attributable to his first term policies. I'm sure he'd really hate to know he's actually an environmental hero at this point 😂

  • ime is hard to get normies to use Element/Matrix, to the point now I know this about Matrix (I've used Element for years and never realised it was closer to Bluesky) I'm going to look into what is functional and under active development in the XMPP space these days.

  • I have a vehicle that uses Chademo, and at bigger rural charging stations, there are usually 3+ ccs chargers for the 1 Chademo. I expect most build out from here to focus on ccs, and there is the tech to convert ccs to Chademo so I'll not be left with an un road-trip-able vehicle, so appreciate while you think they are useless, the majority of investment now is increasing ccs.

Good to hear SA is doing good work here, and disappointed VIC sucks on that stretch. There are charging deserts even closer to Melbourne over East too and that sucks.

agree about most the other points especially queuing for chargers. hope that comes!

So, you've decided to write a terrible EV piece.

Australia faces pivotal moment as traditional economic model starts to fail

    www.realestate.com.au /news/australia-faces-pivotal-moment-as-traditional-economic-model-starts-to-fail/
  • They did the maths:

"Current data reveals a significant disparity in energy use between vertical farms and traditional agricultural methods. A 2021 Global CEA Census Report indicated that vertical farms exhibited an average energy consumption of 38.8 kilowatt-hours per kilogram of produce, a stark contrast to traditional greenhouses, which averaged 5.4 kilowatt-hours per kilogram. This difference highlights the substantial energy inputs required to replicate and optimize natural growing conditions indoors.

The environmental footprint of these operations directly correlates with the carbon intensity of the electricity grid supplying them. When relying on fossil fuel-heavy grids, vertical farms can exhibit a carbon footprint exceeding traditional field production by a factor of ten or more."

  • so I watched to where they said they only grow leafy greens in vertical farms, anything else is too hard 🤦

Industrial farming is something like 10 calories input for each calorie of food produced: this is likely an order of magnitude worse. I'm sure someone has done the maths.

  • but that uses energy you should account for, even if you don't see it in your EV dash.

  • If it's multi million dollar property it's likely 4+ bedrooms.

And are you perhaps in line to inherit and therefore perhaps don't want to lose out? Some of us never inherit property at all, and the taxes on inherited property in Australia are generally minimised. How is that fair? People like to blame parents that don't "work hard" to build wealth for their kids, but the reality is the bulk of wealth is dynastic and protected: the poor will always be the poor. The tax burden should be very much be on the wealthiest 1%, but no one should be penalised for not inheriting property, so granny (and get inheritors) shouldn't be given government money when other options could be fairer across the board.

  • So if Grandma's kids want to inherit, let them take out a reverse mortgage to fund her retirement, so that when she kicks the bucket they pay a chunk to the government if they can't stomach her being forced to downsize instead of live in the massive 6 bedroom mansion she no longer needs (or is able to look after without help). That would be the fair option.

  • yup. the one I hate the most is people on the full age pension living in multi million dollar mansions while others are homeless, and then they pass that untaxed wealth on to their children when they die. A fair system would require they downsize to something more reasonable and live off the proceeds if they genuinely don't have any other source of income in retirement.

  • tbh I am surprised this is getting so much downvoting, I think the arguments are pretty reasonable and appropriate to the sub. Haven't seen it spammed elsewhere.

I am saddened by just how many people in my immediate real life can't give up Facebook (99%) and are deaf to my pleas as to why it is truly evil. They honestly think they aren't being manipulated.

  • I have been saying for the last week or two I expect fuel restrictions to come in after the Easter weekend. Not before, because that would go down like a lead balloon. But this portends my prediction, I reckon.

    Ask first.

Then waggle the finger and say "I asked nicely, but you are not making a smart choice, so daddy has to be mean now".

  • this is quite good, thanks for sharing!

  • Meshcore in Australia is taking off and recently made the first Victoria - Tasmania link. Long distance comms are viable within state with many hops - if you are within range of a repeater hooked into the existing network is possible to go hundreds of kilometres quite easily. We have people participating in synchronous conversations that are occurring over a dozen hops from regional to inner urban anew back again. Yes messages do sometimes get lost but people are creating tools to troubleshoot and track. It's genuinely doing what I had originally hoped Meshtastic would, but could never get messages far enough due to hop limits and telemetry cruft.

  • yeah they really are trigger happy over there, any excuse to delete something. While it is political I think it's very relevant to collapse.
