  • Should cash stay alive to enable "private" transactions?

  • In most cases this problem is already there, even with cash. One time the local supermarkets lost the connection to their backbone system due to a cyber attack. They did not sell a thing, not even for cash, as their registers were dependend on that connection.

  • Für mich hatte die Geschichte vor allem den Appell, einfach anzufangen, etwas zu tun. Du hast keine Organisation, kein Geld oder sonstige Hilfe? Egal! Fang im kleinen an und mache die Welt ein klein wenig besser. Und vlt inspirierst du dabei jemanden. Aber der Fokus liegt darauf selbst tätig zu werden. Und das gefällt mir sehr. Ich möchte auch mehr tun, um die Welt bei mir lokal im kleinen zu verbessern.

  • Ich konnte mit dieser Geschichte leider nix anfangen. Diese Welt ist mir genauso unverständlich wie der Erzählerin unsere. Das Verbrennen von Dingen ist doch an sich kein Problem. Waldbrände gehören so sehr zum natürlichen Zyklus, dass sich einige Pflanzenarten spezifisch darauf angepasst haben. Es ist doch eher die Maßlosigkeit des Menschen das Problem. Mir scheint die Geschichte einfach dieses Detail des Benzinmotors zu nehmen und so weit auseinander zu ziehen, bis es eine ganze Welt umspannt. Und dadurch wird es so dünn, dass es kaum noch Substanz hat.

  • Ach, ich glaube dieser Kommentar war in meiner Buchversion nicht dabei. Das setzt nochmal eine andere Perspektive für mich.

    Beim Lesen habe ich die 99er nicht als "Stadtbevölkerung" gelesen, sondern als Superreiche. Also Leute wie Musk, Ellison, zuckerberg usw. (Ich glaube die Herkunft des 99er Begriffs wird nicht erklärt, aber ich dachte direkt, weil sie er der Welt vlt 99% des Reichtums/der Resourcen besitzen). Die soziopathische Charakterisierung passt da ja ganz gut. In diesem Kontext stellt sich mir allerdings die Frage, was denn vorher passieren muss, damit die Superreichen das Interesse an der Welt außerhalb ihrer Türme verlieren. Dann käme ich nämlich deutlich besser mit ihrer Existenz klar. Zeigt sich ja eher, dass es ihnen explizit um die Versklavung großer Menschengruppen geht.

    Aber klar, die Technologie an sich als Ursache anzuführen zeugt doch von einer großen Fehleinschätzung. Hat was von Kausalität vs Korrelation.

  • Das sehe ich ähnlich. Ich träume nicht vom guten alten Bauerhofleben. Ich möchte gerne in einer Gesellschaft leben, die umweltschonend und trotzdem hoch technisiert ist. So ein bisschen, wie man das in "Darknet" von Daniel Suarez beschrieben bekommt (auch wenn das recht weit weg von Hopepunk und nicht besonders umweltbewusst ist). Nachhaltige, ökologische Landwirtschaft, starke technologische Vernetzung mit einer auf Egalität angelegten Gesellschaftsstruktur, erneuerbare Energien abhängig vom Standort, lokale technologische Fertigung.

    Klar braucht es sicher auch die weniger techologisierten Bereiche. Da sehe ich mich aber nicht; ist einfach nicht interessant oder hoffnungsschöpfend für mich.

  • Wow, that sounds expensive to me. Might depend on what exactly you book for the pictures. We also had a friends rate, but with like 250€ for the 2h shooting and 800€ for the rest of the wedding day. From what I have seen before, without a friends rate we would have been between 1500 and 2000€. That was 2024. Is it that much more expensive in the states?

  • I have not yet watched the video, but it also depends on how easy it is to find the needed settings and how authorative they are. Previously I was on Ubuntu trying to get Nine Sols working with a usable framerate. ProtonDB hat some comments about the needed settings, each comment saying something different, non of them giving positive results. And for using something like gamemode I first had to install it, which is just another step not provided by anything other than comments.

    When I installed Bazzite on the same PC (which was torture in itself because I didn't want to give it a full disk alone), everything worked out of the box for all my games. That tells me, that Ubuntu had no focus on making the experience for gaming better. Similar to Fedora 43 removing support for old Nvidia cards, while Bazzite still supports them. (I still debate myself on switching again from fedora because of all the hassle)

  • "Less efficient" is quite a misnomer here, since the meshtastic network mainly has to work around the regulations, which leaves it only small timeframes for transmitting. When such a project can only transmit for a few minutes per hour, then naturally it has way less bandwidth overall

  • Who should have authority is a really subjective topic. You cannot find a matric, that will fit the definitions of the complete fediverse. So the current solution basically is ditching the vetting process (as it is subjective) and give everyone the possibility to build their community (or instance) with their own rules, admins and moderators. Then the users can choose where to go.

    Is that perfect? No. It just solves the problem of moderation (which is necessary to avoid the worst behavior of human kind) differently than mainstream social media, by creating niches for everyone, which can be isolated by blocking and defederating.

    Of course you can build your own instance and set the rule, than anyone, who wants to moderate, has to provide proof of corresponding education for the community. Maybe that works, though I doubt it.

  • I am still active at my local scouts troop. I'm not a group leader anymore (not enough time), though I'm responsible for the courses for new group leaders (those that are needed to start being a group leader in my scouts organization). Also I was the main author of our new song book and play guitar for the kids on various camps.

    Besides that I currently try to get politically active with a leftist party here. Though I'm not sure, what I can contribute. We will see.

    What crosses my mind again and again for quite a while now is joining or creating a neighborhood help group. Something to help people locally and tie the neighborhood together. Though I'm unsure on how to start that, find other people that would like to join, and also not sure about my own time constrains. Don't want to overwork myself with volunteering.
