  • What did you do to it you monster? You wrecked it!

  • I had forgotten about Zeppelin warfare.

  • So I used to work in industrial automation, and I did see a factory owner buy a robot to automate a task because it was a brain meltingly simple task that was unpopular with his workers. The robot was slower, and more expensive than a human.

It was taking a small piece of metal from a stack and putting it in a machine and pushing a button (not sure if he had a two-hand-no-tie-down set up) then taking the now bent piece of metal out of the machine and putting it on a stack. I think they had about 8 hours production per week of demand for the part.

He didn't do it out of the kindness of his heart but because he got tired of paying recruiters to find people willing to do it.

  • I think establishing a track record of people successfully suing/prosecuting rich and famous people will help victims of the powerful see a viable way forward.

  • I like the actuators. Industry already uses zipper drives for some applications but the ability for actuator to have a preset curve could be pretty useful.

  • I remember laughing hysterically at his bit about Humpty Dumpty being reassembled by horses, "...if you were to design the perfect egg smashing device..."

I also found his portrayal of the titular Derek to actually be quite touching. I enjoyed the show.

  • Mostly jewellery eg my wife's engagement ring, also weirdly a Lego set

  • Yeah I'm not excusing the burglars. I'm saying the way to reduce the number of burglars isn't more police, it's less desperation.

  • The first two responded to the initial call, the second two were from the forensic ID team, checking for prints and seeing if there was anything likely to give a good DNA signal. I don't know what else I could expect from them. I know they worked with the power company to figure out what time my power was cut, and went to my neighbours to see if they had any video from that time.

  • As a person whose home was recently burgled: I spoke with 4 different police officers/detectives in the investigation. I agree that what we need is a less desperate society, not more policing.

  • Yikes! You have to go back at least 4 generations from Cleopatra VII to find ANYONE that isn't EXCLUSIVELY a descendant of Arsinoe III and Ptolemy IV.

  • Creating a hiking trail alters the surrounding environment no matter what you do. Walking off that built path is also destructive more or less. Are all of your camping/hiking supplies natural, or are you going to be leaving behind microplastics with every footstep? Are you polluting the ground with PTFAs every time you dump out used water? How many micrograms of microplastics did you introduce into the area with your plastic bags of freeze dried meals? The soles of your shoes especially. I don't know of a single shoe I can buy that doesn't have synthetic soles. Recycled yes, but natural? Not unless I get clogs from the Netherlands.

The entire 'outdoor activity' industry almost seems like a way for people to cop out from responsibility for climate change.

Camping and hiking serves no other purpose than another way to ignore your own guilt in the dying planet. I used to like camping, hiking especially, but now it carries the same emotional charge as visiting your beautiful, dying parent in hospice. All I see is waning beauty, what once was and what remains and it won't remain for much longer.

The list of bad effects you listed has very little to do with climate change, I guess transportation to parks is a little related. But I think you're missing the point: it hurts you to see the effects of climate change BECAUSE you used to go camping. People need to be taught to love nature, it isn't inherent in (all of) us.

  • Hey I'm Canadian and am proud to say that my Nth great grandfather Godfrey served in an artillery division to defend Canada from US aggression in south western Ontario.

When you say that the Royal Navy had every connection to Canada, what do you mean? Are you arguing that the ships were primarily crewed by people that were already living in Canada when they joined the navy?

  • Canadian participation in the war of 1812 was mostly service in defensive militias. The burning of the Whitehouse was by the royal navy and I don't think they had much connection to Canada

  • Third highest among Europe's richest countries. Is that relatively bad?
