  • I’m guessing because it was a quote from the NSW Premier who praised the guy. Putting it in quotes makes it clear the news outlet isn’t labeling him a hero (which would be editorializing) and is instead quoting someone else (news reporting).

It feels a little silly in this situation where any reasonable person would label the guy a hero, but it is standard journalistic practice.

  • Alcohol has long been seen as a social lubricant for thousands of years in Japan, where business deals and difficult issues are discussed over bottles of beer and sake.

It is believed that drinking alcohol creates a more relaxed environment for such discussions.

This is such an odd bit of “cultural context” to include in the article. Alcohol is a social lubricant in basically every culture that doesn’t outright forbid it.

  • FYI there is a setting to disable ads. Doesn’t excuse them for introducing ads in the first place, but at least it’s a solvable problem (for now).

  • Sh-sh-sha!!

  • Everett may be in the right, but it’s probably not wise to piss off the guy who’s going to be holding a straight razor to your throat.

  • With no beards! That parts important - Hegseth likes his manly men to be smooth.

  • I used to live about that distance from my work. I only walked it occasionally, if the weather was nice, I had the time to spare, and a little extra energy. Generally I took the bus.

I think 30 minutes is about how long I’d walk to get somewhere before considering public transit or driving.

  • Also they had to reduce the episode runtimes to make room for more ads. I recall an interview where one of the writers said this made it really hard to have a b-story to accompany the main plot.

  • I mean, he didn’t have to do this and doesn’t need to keep doing it. He could quit his job any time, but he hasn’t.

The only explanation is he hates brown people more than he loves his wife.

  • Nobel Peace Prize? Motherfucker just bombed Iran. Pick a lane you lunatic.

  • A curriculum vitae (CV) is specifically for academia. It’s much more detailed than a resume. Essentially it’s your entire professional history: publications, invited talks, grants, education and certifications. It can include descriptions of your research interests. It might also list students you advised.

The CV of a mid-career professor or researcher can easily be 10+ pages long. A resume is typically much more curated and only 1-2 pages maximum.

  • Zaslav’s new Streaming & Studios outfit will consist of Warner Bros Television, Warner Bros Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max, as well as their film and television libraries. Global Networks, meanwhile, will include premier entertainment, sports and news television brands around the world including CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., and Discovery, top free-to-air channels across Europe, and digital products such as the profitable Discovery+ streaming service and Bleacher Report.

So basically it sounds like they’re going to remove CNN, Discovery shows, and live sports from HBO Max. They’re effectively undoing the merger that they did just a few years ago, which is great because it was clearly a terrible idea. Add in the fact that they’re also reverting the name of “Max” to “HBO Max” and it’s a complete surrender of this shitty merger.

Now the only thing left is to get rid of Zaslav, the originator of all these bad ideas.

  • Or Parkland.

  • Lemmy.world is the largest instance, for what it’s worth.

  • At the very least it should be $10.80 - the last increase was in 2009 to $7.25, and that’s what it would be if it kept up with inflation. If you pegged it to inflation at earlier points then it would be even more today. The minimum of $3.35 in 1981 would be equivalent to $12.35 today. Any future increase in the federal minimum wage should be set to automatically increase with inflation every year. That way it can’t stagnate for 16 years like it currently has.

Realistically the minimum wage would need to be higher in some places at the local level, in particular in some cities where the cost of living is much greater than the national average. The California minimum wage is $16.50, and it’s higher in more expensive cities (Berkeley is $18.67).
