  • Most school systems accidentally make reading a dreadful activity as the texts are tied to rote learning of facts and events for exam purposes

The big five publishers don't seem to care about declining reading rates and continue to put out the same five or six types of books bc they don't know how to market anything else

Ebooks don't retail for competitive prices, both compared to hard copy books and to other media

  • Do what the fund managers do and set a % range for books unread in your library - no more than 30% no less than 20, perhaps

Cycle volumes in and out. Gotta close that loop. Then each year do a count to monitor growth and shelving needs

  • I have a young calathea ornata

YT says mist it every day and whatever you do, DON'T MIST IT as mould will form, and says it prefers hours of indirect sunlight and also low light conditions such as beneath a canopy -_-

  • Yeah I don't get the hate, people soliciting sexual material that you then provide makes you a prostitute. Nothing wrong with prostitution but if somehow I get on a cam and encourage Bob to come on my command yet still not be considered one, then neither is Remy Lacroix

    Internet be neurotic

  • originally i hated Cao Cao but i'm sure his nuances will emerge with a reread

  • everyone should read dracula. it works for two main reasons, stoker has an eye for the cinematic, and you get behind his protagonists like no other book's protagonists. They have so much love and regard for each other

    it doesn't matter that it's not ʟ ɪ ᴛ ᴇ ʀ ᴀ ᴛ ᴜ ʀ ᴇ its still one of the best Victorian reads

  • the year was 2002 and I was hacking and slashing in Dynasty Warriors 3, one of the GOAT PS2 titles. my bro and I got intrigued by china breaking up and thought thought Lu Bu and Zhang Fei were badasses so we said hey jeeves what other Dynasty Warriors media is there? Soon I discovered a massive novel in four volumes - the romance of the three kingdoms - and thought damn that's fat for a game tie-in novel this Moss Roberts guy must love the games like we do to translate this gigachonker

naturally I bought a copy. the covers and box sheath colored in an unsalable brown only a university press could sign off on, with nearly phonebook-thin paper and typesetting that wasnt always perfectly square on the page, but I ate it up. i got my Han Dissolution on and discovered gandalf, napoleon and macguyver in chinese form: the inestimable Zhuge Liang

I wish i knew where that set got to, but yeah an unabridged chinese epic attributed to some guy called Luo from the 16th cent. is mine

  • Passengers (2016) is a shit film with an excellent premise but I never think about it, in fact it reminds me of its opposite, a superb film with a ridiculous premise called Sunshine (2007)

  • What did this friend say, I cant read a salacious lemmy post without precious details

There's bound to be numerous Rand critiques written throughout the 20th c. just do a web search. Otherwise The School of Life on YT does good philosophy primers. Don't forget Diogenes the cynic either

  • Conflict? A good image is a good image regardless of its provenance. And yes 2020s era 4chan was pretty much glowboy central, one look at the top posts by country of origin said as much. It arguably wasn't worth bothering with since 2015

  • Interesting to compare aluminium recycling with plastic recycling

When the true aim is to recycle material, industry comes to the party and you get a refund scheme, even purpose built deposit facilities that can be set up locally

When the aim is to misdirect public attention toward a non solution you get government mandated plastics recycling bins and penalties for "contamination" plus never ending messaging (gotta keep the lie alive with constant repetition lmaooo). Coercion is just a lowkey admission that the material isn't worth recycling

The real question isn't how to get the plastics industry to change, it's how to make the ruse no longer a tenable position for governments
