  • Hell of a comment + explanations. Thanks for the insights!

  • What I don't get is: why exactly is such software so popular ? Does one really need it instead of just swiping twice or thrice to find the app one is looking for?

  • What.for.

  • A nice corollary to Taleb's 'People reserve standard compliments for those who do not threaten their pride; the others they often praise by calling "arrogant" '.

  • Outside the more pragmatic and conceivable city-state, the very concept of nationality in the modern sense is pretty useless.

  • My first time in Norway (2010) I noticed right away that the prices were pretty obscene, so the first thing I did when I arrived at the hostel was to ask the guy behind the counter what the minimum wage was. He didn't even know the concept of minimum wage.

  • What on earth does the GNU Compiler Collection have to do with Uncle Sam's newest aggression war?

  • Wexit.

  • 😆 yea. For instance, a former friend of mine, a hardcore psychologist and academic, always carried a green rune-like stone for 'positive energy and good luck'.

  • In my (very personal) experience, people who boast about how rational and science-oriented they are tend to do some pretty irrational things, such as believing in amulets and marrying.

  • He'll very much do something about it: express 'deep concern' and call 'on all parties to respect (inter)national law'.

  • Thanks, of course I know alternativeto. Maybe it isn't clear enough in my post, but what I really want is to read about first-hand experiences with such tools: how easy or difficult is the setup really? Do you really host it yourself or use a VPS and why? What are some potential gotchas? And so on.

  • Sysadmin @lemmy.world

Open source, self-hosted alternative to shopify?

  • ...as well as the fact that some countries in theory allow multiple citizenships but in practice only their own country's. Iran is a prominent example. If you have Iranian birthright citizenship, it matters little if you have a second or third one: the minute you set foot in Iran (which is presumably not something that people are doing a lot these days), you will be treated as an Iranian, and if you break the law, you will be tried just as every other Iranian.

  • Where I come from, there's a saying that goes something like this: 'There are only two kinds of people in jail: the very stupid and the very poor.'

  • I can't find either Cromite or Ironfox on F-Droid...what am I missing ?

  • The book 'Freakomomics' deals, among many others, with the similarities between a corporate giant and a regular criminal organisation. In short, petty criminals risk death or prison for only two reasons: a) they feel they have no other choice and b) they are hoping, one day, to become part of the top members. That's about it. Think about it for a while and the argument is easily transposed to the '''legal''' corporate world, which also explains why middle managers tend to be obedient assholes who, instead of being mad at those exploiting them, exploit their underlings themselves.

  • Prosody (XMPP server). Setup takes an hour at most even if you have never worked with Lua. Easy to interact with (it has a built-in shell), easy on system resources, and easy-to-understand config. Support for groups, E2EE, attachments including videos and voice recordings, among others.

  • First of all, it didn't leave, it was driven out. Second and more important: there are IOF positions in Lebanon as of this writing, so the statement is wrong on both ends.

  • Showerthoughts @lemmy.world

If we were to apply the logic of cookie banners and T&Cs in real life, it would look like sexual harassment at best, gang rape at worst

Are there any cultures where kissing is taboo?

  • Showerthoughts @lemmy.world

Knowing how to do many things while not specialising at anything is the perfect way to be replaceable at work.

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

Do you know of a dating app which caters primarily to heterosexuals, respects your privacy, doesn't use analytics and doesn't require G00g13 services to function properly?

  • Showerthoughts @lemmy.world

The number of times a person mentions ChatGPT in a random real-world conversation might work as a rule of thumb to measure her intelligence (inverse proportion, of course)

  • Today I learned @lemmy.ml

TiL that only seven countries make up more than half of the world's human population

Does noise from different nearby sources 'add up'? Or do the different sources cancel each other out? In any case, please provide a formula and an example
