  • Switched to being a full-time Linux user around 2005, still love it ...

    Used AwesomeWM for a long time but a few years ago I switched to an even more minimalist WM a friend of mine is developing ... still love it despite some bugs ...

    Tried a variety of IDEs but always ended up with Emacs ...

    And, last but not least, I've been developing my own software for music composition and performance for more than 10 years now, and use it every day ... can't say it's the same because it always changes, but I use it practically every day :)

  • Well, depends on how brave you are ...

    I've replaced the keyboard on my IdeaPad Flex 5 ... removing plastic rivets and replacing them with superglue isn't fun but it's holding up great so far ...

    One of the display hinges crumbled (or, rather, the plastic mount it was screwed into), I repaired it with heavy-duty epoxy ... the screen is held in the bezel with adhesive clay.

    The laptop has been heavily used over the last 4 years, including many on-stage shows ... so I wouldn't call it unreliable, and it was ridiculously cheap for what it is ... so I wouldn't call it junk ...

  • Interesting, Lenovo must have a wide spread over their product range, then ... at least quite a few of their products are amongst the top scorers on iFixit repeairability scores ... changing the keyboard on my IdeaPad was a different story, though 😅

  • Ja, aber ein nicht-triviales ... warum kann ich nicht sagen, aber die "viertel-" "halb-" "dreiviertel-" Konvention wurde mir schon zig mal erklärt, aber als Mensch, der in einer Gegend aufgewachsen ist, wo das nicht verbreitet ist, komm ich da jedes mal ins Stocken ... denke es liegt halt daran, das ich daran gewöhnt bin, das die Zahl die Position des kleinen Zeigers bzw. der ersten Ziffern beschriebt ... wenn ich also "viertel sieben" höre, denke ich das der grosse Zeiger auf 7 zeigt bzw. dahinter ... ist aber nicht so ... es sei denn, es ist mit "vor" markiert ...

  • Die meisten (professionellen) Musiker und Künstler, die ich kenne (die nicht Vollzeit im Lehrberuf arbeiten), sind recht breit aufgestellt, was die Tätigkeiten angeht ... ein Lehrauftrag an der Uni, ein paar Stunden an der Musikschule oder mit Privatschülern, verschiedene Produktionen, Organisieren von Events. Als Sub (Vertretung) im Musiktheater oder für grössere Unterhaltungsbands spielen. Kannte auch Leute, die jeden Tag das gleiche Musiktheater gespielt haben, aber solche Jobs sind selten.

    Machen machen andere Dinge, die im "Umfeld" der Musik stattfinden, i.e. im Musiksoftware-Bereich (da bin ich letztlich gelandet) oder im Bereich der Instrumenten-Reparatur oder Restaurierung.

    Wieder andere spezialisieren sich auf eine bestimmte Nische, die nicht so häufig anzutreffen ist (i.e. historische Aufführungspraxis, alte Musik, historische Instrumente, usw).

    Allein durch Auftritte seinen Lebensunterhalt bestreiten, ist nur wenigen beschert, leider. Daher, je breiter man aufgestellt ist, desto besser.

    Als Quereinsteiger im fortgeschrittenen Alter, der dazu noch recht häufig anzutreffende Instrumente spielt, wäre meine Einschätzung, das du dir da dein Einkommen "modular" zusammenbauen musst, dir deine Nischen herausarbeiten musst, usw. Inwieweit dir ein Studium dabei hilft, ist schwer einzuschätzen ... wenn du eh' schon auf professionellem Niveau spielst, kann man die Energie vielleicht auch anders einsetzen.

    Letztlich muss man sich auch fragen, was man sich vom Berufsbild "Profi-Musiker" erhofft ... will man seine eigenen Ideen umsetzen? Seine eigenen Songs auf Bandcamp verkaufen? In 'ner Hochzeitsband Schlagermukke spielen? An der Oper im Orchestergraben sitzen?

    Wenn man sich kreativ ausleben will, wäre man dann glücklich, wenn man mit Schlagermucke oder Unterricht sein Geld verdient?

    Ich für meinen Teil hab auch oft mit dem Gedanken (oder der Hoffnung) gespielt, aber über die Jahre auch rausgefunden, das es viele Bereiche gibt, in denen ich kaum glücklich wäre.

    Als Profi auf der großen Bühne stehen, heisst heutzutage auch oft, das man an sich eher ein menschlicher Sequencer ist ... Klick auf den Ohren, ein starres Arrangement, und im Hintergrund läuft 'n Laptop, der genau das Gleiche abspielt, damit man, falls die Gitarre mal ausfällt, sofort rüberfaden kann, ohne das das Publikum was merkt. Als eher der Improvisation zugeneigter Musiker find ich die Vorstellung eher grausig ... da hab' ich selbst als Programmierer mehr kreative Freiheit ....

  • Hmm stimme dir das zu, das es eher um die Menschen als um den Energieträger geht. Und in den Industriemuseen wird das ganze auch durchaus kritisch aufgearbeitet.

    Aber das gleichzeitig eine eher unkritische Romantisierung der Vergangenheit stattfindet, finde ich auch schwer bestreitbar.

    Die "Kumpel"-Postkarten, die man an jedem Bahnhofskiosk kriegt, "Glück Auf" als Gruß usw ... je länger der "schmutzige" Teil zurückliegt, desto mehr werden manche Dinge zum "Lokalkolorit", bei dem die wenigsten an die großen Arbeitskämpfe denken, der sich aber gut vermarkten lässt.

    So zumindest mein Eindruck, der ich die ersten drei Jahrzehnten meines Lebens dort verbracht hab ...

  • Wenn du der Typ Informatiker bist, der von Algorithmen gar nicht genug bekommen kann, gibt es da viele Sachen, bei denen man sich mit diesen Fähigkeiten auch ausserhalb des "praktischen" in digitaler Kunst und Musik austoben kann. Findet man unter Begriffen wie "live coding" oder "creative coding", "Demoszene" (old-school) und noch ein paar anderen. Da findet man oft auch ein paar Gleichgesinnte. Gerade beim live coding ist die Community weltweit gut vernetzt und sehr einsteigerfreundlich ... das Motto ist "embrace the error".

    Falls du eher vom Bildschirm wegkommen willst, geh' in dich und frag' dich, was dich so interessiert, such' dir ein komfortables Tempo, und fang' an ...

    Was auch immer den Flow-State bringt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology) ... ob das nun auf Häkeln, Gitarre Spielen, oder Parkour hinausläuft, kann man ohne deine Neigungen zu kennen schwer sagen.

Auch wenn die Karte da nicht so leicht zu lesen ist, scheint es mir, das der Artikel da, wo ich herkomme (östliches Ruhrgebiet), eher unüblich ist ... und das deckt sich auch mit meiner Erfahrung ... kann mich jedenfalls nicht entsinnen, das das da ein eine prominente Eigenschaft ist ...

  • Hmm not sure whether my cutter directly accepts SVG, I have to check ... in fact I'm using Inkscape to assemble everything and then just use the application to generate gcode ... not sure whether I can skip that step because the SVG doesn't contain any info regarding cutting speed, laser power etc ...

  • If you don't mind using text-based interaction you could give OpenSCAD a try ... it's like TinkerCAD (solids and holes) but with code ...

    I might be biased here because I'm a programmer by trade but I didn't find it too hard ... also mostly need boxy shapes ... but still, I think it's neat ...

  • My personal top 3:

    Video Editing - Kdenlive isn't bad in and by itself but it seems really slow to work with, and getting any kind of smooth preview seems impossible even with proxy clips ... the other day I bought a GoPro 3D camera, and I can cut, preview, rotate, reframe and encode with their Android app on my potato phone from 2021, and it feels snappy (I was surprised, really). Yet on my i7 laptop with Kdenlive, much simpler tasks feel much more sluggish on average ...

    CAD - I use OpenSCAD for 3D modeling and I love it, but sometimes a GUI-Based CAD program would be nice. I'm sure FreeCAD is powerful but the UI/UX aspect makes it hard to unlock that power. I'm a bit conflicted about it because I really don't want to play down the efforts of the FreeCAD dev team, and it seems like everyone and their mothers talk badly about their UI/UX. But on the other hand I tried a couple times and got really frustrated, and I'm usually not one to shy away from steeper learning curves. Supposedly you can do CAD in Blender but I never really figured that out.

    Laser cutting - While most slicers for 3D printers work on Linux, Lasercutting seems a different story. You can still use older versions of Lightburn but it's not FLOSS and it seems strange to pay for a license if the support for your OS has been discontinued 2 versions ago (or one, not sure right now). I want to give Rayforge (https://rayforge.org/) a try soon but until then it's LaserGRBL or the program that came with my laser cutter on a virtual machine.

    Honorable mention: A linux phone would be nice.

  • Ohje, erinnere mich noch an die Gentoo Stage1 Installation um 2009 oder 2010 ... nach 'nem Jahr oder so war die Overlay-Konfiguration in Portage so kaputt das es wesentlich schneller war, Ubuntu drüberzuinstallieren 😅 ... glaube das habe ich insg. 2x gemacht ... wobei, jetzt wo die Prozessoren schneller sind und das Kompilieren schneller geht, vielleicht wäre es mal wieder 'nen Versuch wert ...

  • I doesn't "need" to be imported, the question is just, where do we see the future of federated (non-)platforms ? Do we want them to be "small and cozy" with a small and fairly narrow selection of content or do we want a non-corporate alternative that can compete in richness and variety of interesting content of all niches?

    A lot of folks only seem to see the crappy part of youtube and other platforms, and don't see the richness of content that exists ther. There's still so much interesting stuff to be found. I don't think there has ever been a bigger archive of, say, documentation about arts, crafts, history, food, than YT, even it its current enshittified form. If that's an ocean of content, the Fediverse isn't even a major river (at least that's my impression).

    If you don't mind that, great. But I do, I'd love a non-corporate version to exist that can compete in terms of richness of content.

    And monetary incentive is part of the puzzle, as it incentivizes people to spend time on it, which in terms generates a bigger audience, which in turn has a higher potential to support a wider range of content niches. Plain and simple.

  • I don't agree, really ... that'd limit the Fediverse to hobbyists.

    It's completely legitimate to look for income & exposure as a creator, whether you're making music, visual art, or document your process making physical objects. Corporate platforms, as crappy as they might be, provide a path to that, and in many ways created viable path for creators to do what they like full-time. Not saying that it's perfect or easy. But the Fediverse is currently no alternative at all ...

    Currently, restricting yourself to the Fediverse as an artist unfortunately means that you're taking quite a hit in terms of exposure you can get. As long as that's the case, and people even defend it, then we really can't complain that the Fediverse isn't attractive for a larger amount of people, and centralized platforms will always have the bigger draw.

    I try to avoid corporate platforms as much as I can, but as a consumer I often feel starved of content. I haven't found any interesting woodworking channels on PeerTube, or guitar repair channels, or whatever else I enjoy watching to wind down.

    And as a creator, well ... it's not my source of income, but I sure would like it to be. And if I ever decide to make that step, I'm pretty sure that I's have to make amends to my "no corporate platforms" approach. The Fediverse doesn't feed you.

  • Klar, da ist's noch beengter ... da wäre Gepäck einchecken an sich gar nicht so verkehrt, gerade für Menschen mit eingeschränkter Körperkraft ... die letzten Male, die meine Mutter mit der Bahn verreist ist (normaler Tages-Zug), hat sie das Gepäck meistens aufgegeben.

  • Hab bisher nur einmal eine Nachtzugreise unternommen, und fand' das zwar spannend aber nicht unbedingt alltagstauglich.

    Das Mini-Kabinen-Konzept klingt da echt vielversprechender.

    Wichtig fänd' ich auch gutes Gepäck-handling, z.B. mit 'nem bewachten Gepäckabteil ... den dicken Koffer in der engen 2er-Kabine zwei Etagen in's Gepäckfach zu hieven, war schon ein ganz schöner Akt ...
