  • There are plenty of people calling for violence right now. Find a few disaffected male 20-somethings already leaning towards those ideas, groom them to see if any will go further, coordinate a plan with them, and you can have an "unscripted" but predictable attack. I don't think that part is unbelievable, although I don't personally have a strong feeling on if this particular attack was staged.

  • I was involved with a project trying to simulate growth of a crystal cluster a couple of years ago. The guy doing the coding said it would be easy. It never worked and never came remotely close.

  • I crossed my eyes, but I don't see the picture.

  • Organize going out and invite them. If they all say no, go out anyway, spend a little time out, and don't sweat it. Organize again. They will eventually both go with you and invite you to their stuff. That's more or less how society works.

  • Geology: laughs in multiple working hypotheses.

  • This is a conspiracy theory. The quotes in the article, from NASA and from each individual interviewed, make it obvious that there is no larger pattern. Scientists, like all people, die. These cherry-picked examples have been weirdly strung together by the internet and then paid attention to by the administration for no apparent reason.

  • When I click the link, I see one sentence, a video that doesn't load, an ad, and a demand to subscribe.

  • I would be curious how they phrased the questionnaire and how it is being interpreted. Surely they didn't have a question, "Are you trying to sabotage AI?" Must have been something more benign that was modified in meaning by the marketers.

  • My dad got an art degree by taking one course per semester for years. He loved it. Got his degree last year. Retires this year.

  • Staring at the wall has been huge for my productivity.

  • I still use Google Scholar, but I have recently seen that it is also being enshitified. What's the next best option?

  • This is misleading, to say the least. Poor South Africans tend to be black, but there are numerically more wealthy black people than white people. Income inequality is a huge problem, and there are residuals of Apartheid, but that ended a full generation ago. A lot has happened since.

  • In South Africa, I have seen plenty in the big cities, but nothing on the countryside.

  • 21% of people would support cutting off their own toes. Poll numbers don’t get much lower in practice.

  • And an entire football league.

  • An ideal police force is full of Andy’s. They seem to be full of Barney’s.

  • A backpacker is traveling through Ireland when it starts to rain. He decides to wait out the storm in a nearby pub. The only other person at the bar is an older man staring at his drink. After a few moments of silence the man turns to the backpacker and says in a thick Irish accent:

"You see this bar? I built this bar with my own bare hands. I cut down every tree and made the lumber myself. I toiled away through the wind and cold, but do they call me McGreggor the bar builder? No."

He continued "Do you see that stone wall out there? I built that wall with my own bare hands. I found every stone and placed them just right through the rain and the mud, but do they call me McGreggor the wall builder? No."

"Do ya see that pier out there on the lake? I built that pier with my own bare hands, driving each piling deep into ground so that it would last a lifetime. Do they call me McGreggor the pier builder? No."

    "But ya fuck one goat.."
