Opinions exclusively of my own and of voices in my head.

Autism, communism, arthitism, cannabism.

  • It’d be a massive clusterfuck to accept a member state with ongoing territorial disputes involving tanks and bombs so this isn’t exactly revelatory.

  • I understand now that this is probably not a hypothetical scenario but I still believe that no instance owner owes a service to anyone. Thankfully we’re using a communication protocol that allows us to continue talking even if LW banned our accounts right now.

  • I would imagine that in this hypothetical scenario furries would be able to move to a new instance and keep reading their own posts without further interruption. If they wouldn’t move then they weren’t a community and just a bunch of random people. Then again I’m a person to build a vampire castle and keep posting into the void because too much popularity is annoying.

  • It was never about a real threat. Perceived threat is enough for conservatives because they’re so in touch with their feelings 👀

  • Aren’t sovereign funds generally based on principle of storing of excess wealth as investment for future generations? This sounds like Canadians are creating a fund that’s intended to be spent immediately, and they’re also encouraged to put their own money there. One would think a government should be saving money when times are good, not when they’re getting bad. It sounds like austerity, but also like public investment, so I’m confused by all of this.

  • It’s worth remembering that many colonial powers controlled their Asian subjects via drugs so there is a relevant cultural context for why those crimes are treated this harshly. In general Singapore has more focus on „freedom to live” than „freedom to consume” too.

  • For a moment there I thought you entered this title manually and your keyboard battery died in the middle of the process. Welsh language is a treasure.

  • You’re saying this as if population shrinkage and stabilisation is some guided process and not a catastrophe to all currently living. We’re stuck in capitalism which means people need money to eat and this crisis doesn’t mean humanity is suddenly going to act rationally.

  • Is it just me or is much of it „eeeew”? Most of these effects look really gaudy and SuperEagle-like.

  • The only ads I notice is that apt shows how many packages can be updated through an optional paid Expanded Security Maintenance. This isn’t very obtrusive but I’m on a 4 year old LTS release currently so things might have changed.

  • I've composed some really high quality comments and posts on this account which I would rather not lose if pawb.social somehow goes rogue.

This content was backed up to multiple instances so it won’t be lost that easily. Fediverse platforms/protocols aren’t that great at archival so I embrace that this is more of a place of discussion rather than storage which traditional forums excel at.

Basically, community moderators are like vassals to the instance admins/moderators, who are functionally lords, who serve at the pleasure of the instance owner/host, functionally the kings.

The difference being that you can create your own kingdom easily because we have access to unlimited land and resources, making any attempt at control futile, which is something that kings have to keep in mind.

It's a really serious issue, and I think we should address it sooner rather than later by decentralizing away from lemmy.world and lemmy.ml, but that's difficult to do now that the communities are already established, and would likely be resisted by lemmy.world who have an incentive to maintain their position of dominance.

I’m doing my part by not contributing any content to communities hosted on those instances but we can’t make people happy against their will. If you’re worried that we need to outcompete them in some popularity metrics remember that half of humanity is dumber than an average person ;)

  • As Pole, I agree that we’re at war already. Someone in Portugal or Ireland might have vastly different opinion however. EU, which is a trade union first and foremost, is so big that there’s not enough unifying interest in defence to use it as an argument for Ukraine’s accession and for some it’s an argument against it. If Ukraine is looking for a military alliance it’d be best to look for allies who are existentially threatened by their demise - Nordics and other ex-Soviet states, and that should happen outside of EU frameworks to be worth something IMO.

  • In case of the Threadiverse lack of account portability isn’t that much of an issue unless you really care about karma which thankfully is discouraged systemically here. With Mastodon I kind of understand it because you need to port over friends who follow you but this has no equivalent in the Threadiverse. If you need to move you can just export your settings and you’re off on your merry way.

I’m not a fan of Lemmy.world either but they cater to people who don’t really care about what they chose. It’s not like they are trapped there. If they’re fine with Zionism then at least I know it based on their user handle, which is another benefit of those little kingdoms.

  • None of those cards trump a single member state whose agriculture industry is threatened by Ukraine. Ukraine already „sold” their construction contracts as a part of earlier weapons deals. Ukraine joining EU would also mean that there’s less buffer between EU and Russia, not more. Do we want to go to war because EU defence clauses are stronger than NATO ones? Plenty of countries are thinking about this too.

Western countries like Germany would enjoy another country to do a brain drain on but that’s only a handful of votes.

  • Oh, so this is where Common Side Effects got the idea. Interesting article, thank you.

  • Arguably the barriers to entry for running your own Fediverse software instance are relatively low, therefore users are at not that much of an admin mercy as with commercial social media platforms. People running their instances for others provide a service and they should be allowed to run them as they wish, in accordance to a tried principle of many self-governing communities where those that actually do things should have the most say in how those things are done.

I wouldn’t discount the value of instances being effectively little kingdoms either - it allows them to be ran with focus and purpose. We can’t afford paid admins / moderators and we need them not to burn out, therefore they need a degree of autonomy too. There are many benefits to be found in an instance where leadership simply aligns with your values and you can trust them to do the right thing most of the time, without Wikipedia worth of community rules. Everyone should be encouraged to find an instance like this but it requires thoughtful participation which circles back to the issue that most people don’t want to do this work. There are plenty of solutions that cater to them though.

I get the idea that the article takes a stab at the communities becoming dangerous silos but in the world where so much social media thrives on conflict and outrage, there’s a value in a safe space too. We need spaces for people with common beliefs to discuss things without being derailed by already discounted arguments from outside because there’s enormous value in proliferation of ideas happening on an open platform without resorting to closed off spaces.

  • What are those cards that Ukraine has when it comes to accelerated EU accession? There’s this unfortunate part where it requires unanimous decision of all member states, some of which have interests that do not align with Ukraine. This means that each of 27 members have the strongest card there is and there’s plenty who will use it, particularly countries that are afraid of Ukrainian agriculture industry. We might not like it but that’s the reality and pretending otherwise won’t change it.

  • Yes, we’re allowed to make predictions of the future based on available data. We should actually try to predict it not to get duped by politicians (like EPP-aligned neoliberals). If you turn blind eye to this data then you’re getting duped willingly or maybe you’re upper middle class and will benefit from neoliberal policies. Oh well. You do you, I’ll grumble and rant because I love the moment I get to say „told you so”.
