  • Good article. And all that talk from the two astronauts about the guidance and control accuracy of the Atlas V isn't hyperbole. It really is renowned for precision.

  • Clothes, from the actually-pretty-good Goodwill near me. A few hundred dollars would pay for a lot of gently-worn excellent-condition button-up shirts and jeans.

  • Yes. And woe to those prematurely celebrating our demise.

Hexbear federation is kind of like a movie.

We've had our act one origin story, where we unleash our posting powers upon the world.

We've had our act two challenges, where the libs and chuds thought we were on the ropes due to the domain name thing.

Act three is going to be our triumphant return to the posting wars, where our powers are sharpened, heightened, practiced, and perfected - and we employ those powers with gusto and purpose and joie de vivre.

The lemmyverse is going to know that we are back, and that we overcome all setbacks, and that we take no shits and give no fucks.

China sets deadline for Big Tech to clear algorithm issues, close ‘echo chambers’

  • I've had my windows open overnight for slightly cool fresh air here in southern Ontario for weeks. That would have been insane to my parents in the 1980s who were installing fresh weatherstripping and putting plastic on windows by the end of september.

  • Madman Theory applied to electoral politics.

  • The other issue of course is that mesh networks only work in very densely-populated areas.

I'm in full agreement on your points about organizing being the real task, not the tech side.

  • The fracturing of the community is what I worry about most. Sites and software and services come and go. All that matters is that the community can find each other again quickly.

  • That's good to know, thank you! I've bookmarked both.

  • Americans don't notice censorship the same way that fish don't notice water.

  • And even if the hosting provider doesn't, the US government can just seize the domain. .net is administered by US-based Verisign.

So what's our plan B? If the domain is seized, I'm assuming that we'll get updates from the fediverse account. But if there's some sort of problem there (matapacos.dog is seized, or no updates get posted because those with access to the matapacos @hexbear account have been arrested, or other unforeseen problem) how do we re-group?

  • All the come from aways who spent their lives in Ontario, Alberta or Saskatchewan and have lived their adult lives in social-conservative echo chambers and expect to be hailed as noble conservative heroes when parachuted into provincial contests in traditionally Conservative ridings have no idea how politics works in NB. They think western-style conservatism will sell with a majority of locals. But NB politics is extremely local, to the point where historically the only difference between the Liberal party and Progressive Conservative party is the colour of their lawn sign and local name recognition is everything.

  • he used to be in an anti-French hate group.

    The Progressive Conservatives? ;)

Yeah, he's one of the old COR diehards. Fuck them. It's so satisfying to see that prick not only lose the election but also his own seat. He's not the type to handle rejection well so I hope this eats away at him until he dies old and miserable and alone.

But the best news of the night was Faytene Grasseschi losing. She's too dangerous to allow to hold any elected office. She's an evangelical come-from-away who was brought in specifically to be Higgs' right hand in implementing anti-LGBT+ policy and legislation.

  • I find it hard to get upset during the tank-introduction scene in "All Quiet On The Western Front" because we all know what happened to a hell of a lot of German soldiers who survived WW1.

  • Canadian province of New Brunswick minor electoralism win. The provincial Liberal party won an extremely strong majority over the incumbent Progressive Conservatives (and yes, that is legally what they call themselves, long story). I don't live in my NB homeland anymore but I do keep an eye on the news there. This is good news.

While normally an NB election has historically been meaningless as the two big parties have had basically identical platforms for decades, this particular election is a big win for trans people. The outgoing premier Blaine Higgs is a vicious transphobe who put other vicious transphobes in his cabinet. The incoming Liberal premier Susan Holt may be very liberal in economics but she's at least good on the social policy side, especially on LGBT+ issues. I'll take Holt over Higgs anyday. Higgs didn't even keep his seat in what is normally a PC stronghold. He pissed off so many people with his various bigotries that went on full display the last few years.

  • Exactly.

  • Now who’s, I say, who’s responsible for this unwarranted attack on my person! Nazi gold and the Swiss. That's a joke son, I say, that's a joke.

  • The Swiss set the gold standard for how westerners would forever handle nazis.
