  • I've had drugs that put me in a weird agonizing bodyless state for what seemed like probably days. It's really hard to describe, but it was terrible. And I think an hour or two in reality. This post reminded me of that strongly, an awful idea.

  • I think religious law is bad, whether it's islamic or jewish or christian or any other religion's. I don't criticize islam as much as other religions these days, because there's brutal islamophobia in the west, and where I live especially. But still, no gods, no masters, and that includes islam.

  • I had an argument with the user posting the Jago comics, and I have two things to add here:

    1. Even when many users presumably blocked them, there's still a lot more downvotes than upvotes on most of the Jago comics they posts. Thus it's actually a majority, if there isn't something I overlooked.

    2. If we asume that a) majority of people don't like these comics and b) they will all eventually block them, it will be really bad for any new user. What will any average new user see is a bunch of comics they don't like, with almost only upvotes (since users who blocked the poster don't downvote it)

    I think that's gonna drive new users away, and it's a reason why I wouldn't promote Lemmy to my friends for example.

  • I talked about anarchism with someone recently, and "evil people" was their main argument.

    I've been thinking about it a lot. My point of view is that power structures give those evil people an unmatched oportunity to gain power over others. I think most of them are in politics, be it in democracy or authoritarian regimes. They are the best at climbing hierarchies and have the motivation to do so, unlike most people.

    But still, it seems that having evil people in politics is somehow better than having to deal with them directly for a lot of people. It may be the fear of unknown - governments might do bad things on a much bigger scale, but at least they are predictable. That's just my interpretation though.

    By banning people from posting if the majority doesn't want to see what they are posting. If I was in the minority of downvoters I would simply block you.

    But if I were to invite people to Lemmy now, it would go like: "it's amazing but there are a few people posting bad stuff every day and you have to manually block them to make the place enjoyable"

    It's not just me, it's objectively the majority. And that's excluding people who blocked you and thus don't downvote you.

    You act like you have some undeniable right to post whatever you want if it doesn't break the rules directly, but you seem to forgot that the rules are there to make the community enjoyable.

    While that might be the case in some communities, I don't think it is in this one. People look at comics because they like them, and downvote comics they don't.

    And I don't think votes are unpredictable either. When OP goes to post comic from this transphobic and sexist author, they know very well it will be downvoted.

    I'm not saying we should delete everything with downvotes, but this is clearly a case of deliberately posting content while knowing the community will not enjoy it.

    Reddit solves this with karma. Getting downvoted is a punisment, and so OP wouldn't keep posting these comics to not ruin his karma entirely (which might even prevent him from posting and commenting in many subreddits).

    The karma system has its own problems and I'm glad Lemmy doesn't have it, but it also means we need to solve this another way.
