  • AND even with Destin's grill brush being mostly made in USA to prove a point, he still had his kids and other kids (late high school to college aged from the looks of it) assemble and package them instead of having a factory with workers paid a living wage, with retirement, healthcare, a union, etc. He says he pays the kids "better than any other summer job", but it completely negates any point relating to labor that he wants to make.

  • It's been a solid tool for hosting just for myself to bridge all the different platforms/protocols that people want to talk to me using, but there is no way I would recommend it to anyone else. I don't know if it will ever get to a point where it works well enough for me to recommend. If you do want to host a server though, I strongly recommend matrix docker ansible deploy to do so.

  • 100% agree. It's worth testing with a new number first before porting your current number to JMP.Chat

  • I switched from Google Fi to the T- Mobile MI30TI plan (30GB/month, $10/month, data-only) with JMP.Chat VOIP and couldn't be happier

  • stylix, firefox/firefox fork declarative configuration (pulling css files to include from 3rd-party git repos), and defining accounts which are then used for mbsync, thunderbird, khal, vdirsyncer, aerc, etc. are all killer features that will keep me using home-manager for the foreseeable future

  • I agree that there should be an alternative, open-source project, though I know I'm not all that qualified to support outside of financially, (which I would).

I disagree that this isn't taking up space. Notoriety is a huge asset, especially for tools like this that rely on crowd-sourced information. It would be far better, all other things being equal, to start with the user base and name of ICEBlock than to make a competitor and need to promote it enough to get people to use it over ICEBlock. I highly doubt that a competitor will get anywhere close to the same media attention that this got.

  • I'm a paid contributor to Delta Chat, but I don't feel like I can recommended it until it includes sealed sender and PFS. Signal really changed the game with chat apps. 2.0 looks great, tho! https://delta.chat/en/help#sealedsender

  • If you can't get people to switch to Signal, you won't get them to switch to anything else.

  • There's khal. It's fine, but can get pretty slow. pimsync for syncing.

  • Yeah I heard the Tangara team is taking a break. Hopefully they'll start back up soon.

The other open hardware devices that I'm excited for are the Precursor once it gets more functionality and the Teufel MYND once it's available in the US. There is, unfortunately, a lot of stuff out there that claims to be open hardware, but isn't released under an open license or any license at all, and true open hardware end-user devices are few and far between.

The CPU on the Mudita Kompakt is a huge part of what makes it slow. There is definitely latency in Signal because of that. The OS is not open source and it's pretty infuriating. There was an opportunity to create a device that the open source and security communitirs could rally around. Instead they decided to focus on pseudo-science and "wellness", which is incredibly unfortunate.

  • It's good. I use it. It's not FOSS.

  • I have a Pixel 7 with GrapheneOS that used to be my daily driver. It's nice, but I'm trying to move away from doing everything on an Android or iOS smartphone, so I'm going the multi-device route. I still use my Pixel for banking apps on wifi at home and as a Briar server.

I got a OnePlus 6 to install Linux on because it's one of the more well-supported options and I got it on eBay for $80. It works okay, but doesn't check enough boxes to replace any devices. I'm waiting on an MNT Pocket Reform computer that I hope can be a better, albeit more bulky option.

I got a Mudita Kompakt as my phone primarily because of the switch that can cut power to the GSM module and the 4-day battery life. It's slow, but calling, texting, and Signal work fine on it. I use it with a $10/month 30GB/month T-Mobile data-only plan and a VoIP phone through JMP. chat.

I use a digital camera for photography and a Tangara music player.

I got a physical transit pass to not need a smartphone for that.

When the PocketMage kit becomes available, I hope to offload notes and calendar to that. I'm also playing with replacing other smartphone functionality with a Meshtastic or NomadNet bot hosted on a server at home combined with a T-Deck LoRa device for things like live transit schedules and weather forecasts.

It is a lot of different devices that take up a significantly larger volume and are heavier, but what I've found is that I don't need all of them all of the time and more often than not I still just have the Mudita Kompakt in my pocket.

  • NixOS. Works great. I'm a bit of a masochist.

  • I use addy.io with fastmail and bitwarden (not self hosted). I switched to that from protonmail+simplelogin+protonpass and get basically the same user experience. What am I missing that requires self hosting bitwarden?

  • I've considered doing this. Did you have to remove the old screen even though you were doing a chassis swap?

  • Highly likely they would be installing new software

This basically means that the system will rot over time and will need to have someone who knows what they're doing to maintain it. If they don't know enough to do the initial setup, then I would worry about how quickly it would go awry after you no longer have access. given the number of users and the assumed criticality of the data, I would have a long conversation about what can happen and what their plans are

  • Will they need to install new software after you set it up, or just have user storage and maybe do system updates?

What will they be doing with it?

Do you have a backup storage location available?

    How many users?

What kind of permissions do they want various users to have?

How critical is the data that will be housed on the server?
