    Yes, it's similar to Signal and a bunch of stuff out there. The founders of the tech industry are just moving the model from one name to another, disguising it as more progressive and secure, but essentially it's still the same prison, and we're just digital prisoners being moved from one prison to another.

    He left Whatsapp and created something similar. There's no guarantee it's more private, more secure, or won't be sold again.

  • I joined both protocols quite early and have used many platforms across both of them.

    Regarding AT Protocol, as I mentioned in my post. As for ActivityPub, the data is not publicly exposed like the PDS identity in AT Protocol, but it also has many limitations. The platforms are decentralized and managed by thousands of different servers and different administrators. The registration process, usage, and the rules you are subject to on each server are also different and depend heavily on external factors. You cannot control your accounts 100%. The administrators of each server can see and know all your data and actions.

    Also, the hosting company goes bankrupt, or they no longer maintain the server. The administrator gets tired and shuts the server down, etc. There are thousands of reasons and things can happen. And your accounts become passively dependent on many things beyond your own control. For example, I have lost my Mastodon and Pixelfed accounts several times because their servers disappeared. And because of that, I also cannot tell which protocol is better than the other. Each protocol and its community have their own disadvantages and are unsafe in different ways. And each protocol and its community also have their own promising aspects somehow.

  • As mentioned in my post, there are tons of tools and derivative applications that can simply drop in any username/profile and access a full index of publicly available data about that profile/account: frequently used app and usage times, who blocked you, who did you block, your old username, etc.. because PDS data is public. That is truly dangerous and concerning.
