  • I support you supporting curiosity. If OP is asking in good faith, they deserve not to get torn apart.

That said, "racism" doesn't only describe explicit disparagement of one race by another. Racism can also be a feature of language, systems, communities, etc.

  • I think they're suggesting that each of the 2000 signatories put up $50m each, totalling $100bn.

  • I cringe when my (well-meaning, truly) Democrat siblings mention NYT as a trusted news source. "Did Netanyahu Stumble Into a War Crime by Nuking an Orphanage?"

  • Who are you asking?

  • Probably because sheriffs are elected, and aren't overseen by any government body. In between elections, they can do anything they want. The podcast In The Dark covered how a Minnesota county sheriff bungled, and then covered up, the investigation of the disappearance of Jacob Wetterling in 1989. Around the country, sheriff departments consistently have crime clearance rates below 20%. Pathetic.

  • To your last point, there's a great book called Survival of the Richest by Doug Rushkoff. He describes "The Mindset" in which tech billionaires keep trying to use tech to escape the climate apocalypse that they created. They simply lose the ability to think of any solution besides further growth.

  • Keep in mind that a significant portion of internet comments are bots, especially on X.

  • The Diabolical Lies podcast had an episode recently where they explored the history of sexual orientation. Apparently it was only in the last 100 years that we started using "homosexual" to describe a person's identity rather than a person's behavior. Personally I support you identifying however you want, though I understand other people being less flexible.

  • I'm not making excuses for the dems complete lack of backbone, or their complicity in all the current horrors, but I do think this conversation should always acknowledge that many millions of (poor, undocumented, disabled) people would be utterly fucked during a total shutdown.

  • For dinner, anything from Alison Roman. For dessert, anything from Claire Saffitz. It's a pretty basic take but their recipes are simple and incredibly tasty.

  • Wow this is great info! Thank you. I've had Pixels for years, so I'm familiar with some of the hardware limitations. When you say there's no manual focus on the camera, do you mean I can't tap on the screen to spot focus, or there's no linear focus adjustment like on an SLR?

    What are the downsides?

  • They have not increased their activity in Minneapolis since they announced the drawdown. They weren't gone right away, and they're still using the Whipple building for detention and outfitting vehicles, but most of the abductions are happening in the greater metro area and even then they've decreased.

  • What's your budget exactly? I haven't tried them, but Consumer Reports has high ratings for the DustBuster CHV1410L and the ION HHVI315JO42. You can get either one for under $50.

  • It's for women to wear in their vaginas when they believe sexual assault is unavoidable. It has spines pointing inward that will hook onto a penis to stop the assault and punish the assaulter.

  • You can have your opinion, but I'm surprised there's anyone who sat and watched it and didn't enjoy it.

  • Oh, I fully believe community is the most important resource. I wouldn't be driving off somewhere to fend for myself, I would just want my car to be functional.

  • I'm so sorry you had to experience that. I wasn't there, but I think about that night a lot. I go to a lot of shows and festivals, and it's therapeutic to be able to take drugs and dance in the dark with my friends. The idea of a tragedy happening during such a joyful time is just unspeakable. I'm glad you're safe and I wish you all the healing in the world.

  • My last car was an EV. I loved how it drove, I loved charging at home and never having to stop at the gas station, and I told everyone around me, "If you can afford it, you have an ethical obligation to buy a hybrid or an EV." Since Trump 2.0 I've been concerned about some form of collapse that would make me flee my home - natural disaster, violent military occupation, etc. I started to wonder, "What's stopping Elon from limiting access to all these superchargers?" Public chargers are much slower than gas, and they're easily vandalized. The whole thing just seems like a liability at this point. At least in a Mad Max scenario I could barter for a can of guzzoline.

I hate that I'm even considering any of this.

  • I should clarify that I only read half the book, so I haven't read that scene. It sounds like the movie didn't capture something special about his relationship with the worm. What I got from only seeing the movie is that there's a skyscraper-sized being that behaves more like a force of nature than a creature. So the vibe I got was more like Paul learning to surf than taming an animal.

That aside, visually I was impressed and thought afterwards, "Well, that could have looked a lot dumber than it did."
