  • Holy shit I just checked comment history. You really need to chill out mate

  • Ok good chat

  • I think if I was a teenager again it would just make me want to see what special effect I would get lol

  • Just because those labels aren't science-y doesn't make them lesser

  • You're right, it's not an excuse, but I think it's the reason lol. If the only practical solution is systemic change, then we have to do that. I'm not good at that sort of thing though.

Actually one thing I have noticed is that the people around me notice what I do. Like if I buy the thing that is better for the environment, my friends and family ask me about it, and often they do the same thing. I know it's not the global change you're talking about, but just showing the people around you there are other ways has a powerful local effect.

For example, when I was healthy, I rode my bike to work every day. People noticed, but said I was crazy. Then 1 other person was inspired and did it too, and quickly we ended up with a bike club and most of the company was doing it. Then the company bought a bike shed for parking to support us. It was great. All just because I did my own thing and people noticed and thought it was a good idea. I think that's probably the only real practical way we can influence the world as individuals.

  • Yeah that makes sense. But would they send a letter to Valve or something?

  • I don't want stranger juices of any kind in my coffee

  • Yep that's why I said planning to ;). There's no practical way they can tell I'm dead, assuming people don't try to change the credit card on file or address or anything like that. Worst case scenario it's not that big a deal anyway. Even if they only get to play for like 6 months that's still pretty good in my books.

Things are in a funny state huh? I wonder what the economic impact of so much digital value disappearing into the void will be... Normally you can pass on stuff like DVD collections and other assets, but increasingly we seem to own nothing and assets die with us.

  • Anyone who has tried to sort their Steam library into genre categories knows this is true lol. Labels are still helpful, but also every game is an action game if you zoom in too much and the lines between categories are blurry. But people here are going to hate you for that opinion.

That being said, I don't think there's any dedicated "taxonomers". Usually people are specialised in the taxonomy in their particular primary field. Like a botanist knows a lot of plant taxonomy. It's a communication tool, and it's still helpful, even if it's not a "precise science".

  • Imagine that level of extreme vertigo where the ground completely changes based on your angle to the nearest lämp and you're just falling over and rolling around. I feel bad for the moths now it sounds like torture

    :(

  • I'm planning to put my Steam account details in the same envelope as my will and bequeath it to my kids lol. Generational games library

  • I kind of hate infotainment systems anyway. I just want a mounted screen to cast Apple Drive Mode or whatever it's called. The default GUI they put there is fucking awful. I tried to use the inbuilt GPS once and actually gave up and just went on a spiritual journey instead. Surely it can't be that complicated just to have essentially a mounted iPad?

Great to hear that cars can be saved though. I was worried I'd have to sell my perfectly good car because I want an electric motor… I was thinking like, the rest of the car is fine it doesn't need to be trashed at all

  • I approve of this business model. Make them pay extra for professionalism so it stops being the default. "You could be saving money if you just accepted cat girls" will haunt their dreams every night

  • Don't worry, I understood what you meant :)

Wait a minute… you're not OC! (Original Commenter)

  • Yeah I just feel like the example given doesn't line up that well. There's no difference between his good example and bad example other than having a human perform quality control, that doesn't make it a reverse centaur situation.

The example given is more like… unsupervised horses on typewriters. The A.I. owns the process from start to end, and the human just clicks "upload" and trusts that the horse wrote a good article about books that it cannot comprehend in the first place. You can't trust the A.I. to do a good job unsupervised, at least not yet.

A better example of reversed centaur is a lot trickier to define… it's about an inversion of control. The A.I. making the executive and high level decisions, while the human does the grunt work like a meat puppet. We don't have a lot of that to work with (yet). But with the same book article example, I can imagine something like:

The human asks the A.I. what kind of article to write, and also asks the A.I. to do all the research. The human manually writes a bad stupid article based on fake data. Maybe the A.I. also puts in something that gets the human in trouble like unknowingly recommending some hentai in the romance section. The human is doing the grunt work, while the A.I. steers them towards a cliff face.

  • I try to have a "hands off" approach to other people. If they do something I disagree with, I'll casually tell them, but that's it. Ultimately they're their own person and can make their own choices. Unless it directly impacts me, in which case I draw a line in the sand.

When I was younger, I got mad a lot, and tried to force people to do things my way and control then. But I didn't like that and try not to do it anymore. Actually I find that people are more likely to change their minds if there is zero pressure. Instead of "fighting against" your pressure, it gives them space to actually think about it. Sewing the seeds of doubt or something.

  • Oh yeah I see what you mean now. My bad for misreading it
