  • I'm excited too, can't wait for it to be viable. It doesn't feel there yet though, even the site says it's not recommended for your primary phone. I checked my phone model and camera and calls and SMS doesn't work for example…

  • Which admin? Is the admin of !privacy@lemmy.world doxxing people? That sounds like the opposite of privacy

  • Hang the fancy stuff, everything else gets stuffed into a drawer

  • I agree with you. Unfortunately science has a lot of gatekeeping and elitism in it… often people are ostracised for their beliefs if you don't agree and go along with "the general consensus" at the time. People like this aren't very good at going going with the general consensus.

Half of science is also your reputation. If a random newbie says they saw a new species in this part of the woods, literally nobody will believe them. You have to be good at writing reports in the style and language expected, and knowing where to submit these reports. You can't just use normal people words and upload it to wherever.

It's a shame, because I think there's a huge amount of people that would love getting into the "leg work" of science, which many desk jockeys dislike, but they aren't book smart so they're not allowed. These kinds of people will never get a PHD, it's not their path. But it's hardly difficult to point a DSLR camera or take samples.

I know someone who goes up into the "mountains" for a week once a month, sets up camp, and fossicks for gold. Often for longer periods of time. Imagine if they were paid to look for fossils or take geology samples or other science-y stuff? I know for a fact these people would absolutely love playing with a new toy and learning how it works. How many scientists go into the field that often? Multiply that by like 100 because they have this whole community of fossickers.

  • I exist because I do, I will until I don't, which will be earlier than I think, and the only alternative is to "clock out early", which I was told to avoid doing.

  • It's my theme song for the day, and I whistle or hum or tap along or just enjoy it at random moments. Eventually it's replaced with a different song, and I repeat. I find that the song that's playing tends to match up to the theme of the day. Like recently it was "Walking on Sunshine" and it was a day where it finally stopped raining and everyone was just happy and relaxed

  • In my dreams, if I call the names of my pets, they often show up just to hang out. They have good ears

  • Yes I remember it being the perfect level of spiciness. Not too hot so it becomes unpleasant, but moderately warm and comforting level of heat. Good luck!

  • I can't really cook anymore since I got sick, and I have no idea what they put in at the restaurant lol. All I know is that they call it Aka ramen and it's great.

I found a picture online of what it looked like, maybe you can find a recipe or reverse engineer it? It has this beautiful oily fat layer and deep red-orange colour, I think chives and slices of pork, with those magic 3 day ramen eggs, and the thin noodles. It had other stuff in there too but I was too busy enjoying it to pick it apart lol

  • But if you give us all your personal details and make an account so we can track you and sign up for spam, you get 2% off any order over $100!!!

  • Enjoyment is very complicated. You can't predict if someone will enjoy something based on a set of factors like knowledge of the activity or experience, so using it as a blanket explanation doesn't work either.

I enjoy watching people play Rocket League well, but I don't enjoy watching soccer. I don't like chess tournaments but I'll watch a Counter Strike tournament. I don't play any of these or know much about them, so what's the difference here? I'm not sure, I just like one over the other.

  • Golf and lawn bowls for me. I don't like playing them, and I don't like watching them. However Mario Golf and Golf With Friends is fun, so I think we just need to adjust it to have more explosions and make it a full contact sport

  • I love Japanese food. Actually I love the food in all places I visit. Some people are very not adventurous though… Like this guy has probably been to one local bad sushi joint and proclaimed all 🇯🇵 food is bad. Red spicy ramen is one of my favourite things on the entire planet, 11/10 meal for my tastes

  • That's why every fucking website has that annoying banner begging you to install their spyware app

  • I love it when my app takes 8 seconds to load 120MB of JavaScript frameworks and CSS and images. It really gets me going, the anticipation

  • I feel like this is a culture problem as much as anything else. Which is why it's so hard to fix. You can't easily fix police officers, legal systems, etc, not taking women abuse victims seriously… they don't care because they don't have to. Later, something horrible happens, and what happens to the officials that completely failed in their duties? Literally nothing happens.

Imagine if this was any other malpractice that resulted in death. Someone walks in bleeding profusely and the doctor tells them it's not important and sends them home. Then they die, and the malpractice is very obvious and results in severe consequences. That's why doctors are so careful, they have a huge responsibility and duty of care.

I think the strongest lever to start with is to put higher responsibility to other professions. If someone dies after talking to the police and being dismissed, that should terrify the people involved. Right now they just shrug and forget about it, and do it again next month.

If someone reports abuse and fear of their life, make people care about it and take it seriously. That's step one.

  • We outsourced household duties so that people can maximise their work output and productivity. Grandparents at the nursing home being abused. Children at childcare in a mosh pit. Takeout and uber eats. Hiring professional cleaners. But now everyone is still struggling anyway so we destroyed it all for nothing. 😂 The entire second income is being spent on replacing that unpaid labour.

I often wonder how it's possible that things have "improved" so much over the years but also gotten worse. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a change soon where people try going back to older methods of doing things, because the newer ways are economically fragile and the societal contracts are all being broken.

Nursing homes changed from a place you trust will care for the complex needs of your loved ones, to a hole to dump people we don't want to look at anymore, where they try to skimp out as much as possible in every possible way. It became the "default", so now it's been "optimised". Nursing homes don't have to be shit, but they have to be very profitable, so they often are. Good care is expensive, and companies don't have the emotional investment to care.

It wasn't really until the 60's that nursing homes started becoming a "thing". Before then, grandma just lived in mum and dad's house. Houses were also bigger of course; I can't imagine cramming everyone into an apartment with stairs.

  • Maybe the ones around here are just garbage then. The first one I bought for $120 AUD 4 years ago didn't have a map

  • Only the fancy pants ones. The cheap ones are like blind bumblebees that clean by accident while running headlong into every wall. I dunno if a shop would risk using expensive ones when underpaying a cleaner is cheaper. There's a message here but I'm too tired to see it. I wonder if you actually did the math, how expensive would hiring a cleaning service match up to buying one of the fancy robot vacuums?
