  • I think that you are indeed wrong.

First, it is worth noting that this designation was made by a Democrat Senator from California, not by anyone else (e.g., by someone in the Administration), and a better way of viewing this is that the Internet Archive is replacing the San Diego public library as a federal depository library because it was simply too burdensome a role for the latter as it ran out of space storing hard copies of everything and making it available.

Second, the people involved are excited about this because they want to leverage the Internet Archive's experience in preserving and expanding access to documents, and in particular, the Internet Archive wants this designation because it gets them easier access to these materials by being a formal part of the network.

So I think that this is overall a good thing, rather than something to be very concerned about.

  • Does that slant big tech in that direction because they want to do business with the government?

Unfortunately, I agree that is a very fair concern.

  • This executive order only sets policy for AI use by the federal government, not for how AIs must behave for the entire country.

  • Supposedly the following is a real problem:

For example, one major AI model changed the race or sex of historical figures — including the Pope, the Founding Fathers, and Vikings — when prompted for images because it was trained to prioritize DEI requirements at the cost of accuracy.

Given the administration's immense reputation for veracity—the biggest we have ever seen—I see no reason to doubt this.

  • The title of the post, as opposed to the title of the executive order, is very misleading: this executive order only applies to the AIs that are allowed to be procured and used by the federal government, not to all AI in general.

(Having said that, the underlying motivation behind it is still nonsense, just as it has been for all of the other executive orders.)

  • Fair enough, I suppose that you cannot rationally talk someone out of being butthurt about something.

  • Indeed, I can see how this must be the very first time that you have ever seen someone use the word "America" to refer specifically to the "United States", due to how rarely this is done, which threw you off.

  • I can see how this must have been confusing for you, given that the word "America" is generally not used to refer to a particular country.

  • The borrow checker is a lot deeper than merely making pointer use a bit safer; it provides a model for data ownership based on affine types.

Also, to the extent that "Ada requires the programmer to give enough information to the compiler so as to ensure that it actually outputs what you want it to," if I understand you correctly, that is basically true of every language with a static type system. At the extreme end, we have dependently typed languages which essentially let you express arbitrary mathematical propositions in your types and, if the program compiles, then you know that they will always be satisfied without having to do any checks at runtime.

  • Does Ada have a capability as powerful as the borrow checker?

  • yeah no one is talking about this term.

Yes they were; that is exactly what "after they win seats in the midterms" means.

but you just have to look at bidens last term for your answer.

Democrats were not a majority in the Senate at any point in Biden's term, and even if you lump the independents in with them that only gave them an extremely narrow margin.

On top of that, they lost the House half-way through Biden's term.

  • The cuts are not so easily rolled back as long as Trump has veto power.

  • I suspect that having to wear skirts would have been more of a problem.
