I’m mostly writing this down because I feel like this is the sort of day that without nuance would go down in my records as a big fat L.

They arrived a bit later than usual, with messy wet hair, indicating a shitty night/morning, with the mood to match.

They were busy most of the time with a project that is really draining them. We ran across each other at times and exchanged pleasantries but they seemed to either (1) actively avoid me because they find me annoying, or (2) actively avoid wasting time by hanging out with me (see my book episode from a couple days ago for why this isn’t a totally unreasonable assumption).

What’s worse is, this is the first day in a while where we haven’t accompanied each other home. The reason might be that they want to avoid me, but could just as well be that they couldn’t find me when they left because I was stuck in the bathroom talking a huge dump, and they don’t get along with the few other people who were still there.

If they really wanted to avoid me out of dislike, they could have answered a short and curt “fine” and walked away to my “how’s it going”, but in reality they answered in some detail what they had been doing (and kind of implicitly asked for encouragement).

Crushposting:

With #1, I suggested making new not-quite-hanging-out-plans, and they want to postpone it for a vague couple of weeks since they’re very busy. Understandable but frustrating.

So in my solitude I made plans with #2 instead, also in a vague couple of weeks.

First of all, it would be really funny if I accidentally planned to meet them both on the same day, and got to reap my own rotten seeds in the worst possible way.

Second of all, it’s kind of a warning signal that my immediate backup plan was #2. Well, since I gave them those names here, it’s obvious in hindsight, but indeed, my brain wires are quite crossed. In my defense, I was planning on talking to both of them, I just wanted to talk to #1 first to ensure maximum schedule flexibility, and then make plans with #2. Me and #2 made a deal to strictly be friends, and I don’t want to waste a great friend opportunity with them.

And then we have #1 who I worry I might have come on a little too hard to. Sure, a handful (pun intended) of shoulder caresses and hair ruffles might not be a big deal to most people, but to them it could. “They started it” is my excuse, which might not be the most mature attitude. So I don’t touch them as much anymore, which could also be sending the signal that I’m not interested in them anymore.

I’m rambling, but I think there’s value in submitting my desperate confused thoughts and actions to ruthless critique.
