  • We are men of science. Mentioning such trifles does not become us.

  • "Government says that when it does terrorism, it's called something else, so it's not terrorism."

I read this question as someone asking what is the SUBSTANTIVE difference between the two, because maybe they are struggling to see a difference between a president who LITERALLY THREATENS NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION UNLESS HIS POLITICAL DEMANDS ARE MET after bombing school children and a "terrrorist."

"Terrorism" is one of the biggest emotional trigger words in the political language. If you want to discredit your enemy and remove their legal rights, you can call them a terrorist. If you want to terrorize people as a state actor, you have ample semantic and legal tools to pretend you are not committing terrorism, inlcuding text book definitions.

Having an indifference to that is deeply unserious. You are doing nobody any favors.

  • I'm pretty sure there's a gay campfire orgy in 300, with half of the Athenian contigent sitting and watching.

  • Yup, fans are on me during the day time when it heats up. But at night, I just went to get things as cold as possible without running the a/c.

  • We are literally talking about the difference between bombing someone from a plane and bombing them from your chest. This is exactly the place to talk about it.

The dictionary definition is just a start. The question for the adults in the room is how that applies in reality and if there is a real difference between terrorism and, say, an air bombing campaign.

By leaving the definition out there and ending the conversation, you are implicitly arguing that there is a substantive difference.

The question for you is why are shy about engaging in a discussion.

  • I think the difference is that reddit has more social network lock in, which allows mods to be bigger assholes. People will tolerate asshole subs if the sub is big enough.

Second issue is subs are more likely to BECOME assholes on very large subs because it's a lot of work herding kittens.

Third issue is mods are ALREADY likely to be assholes because modding large subs is very much not fun and an insecure ego is a much greater motivator than secure altruism.

  • That's the basic theory I'm going with. Imagine a Y. Each of the top ends are two rooms with one window each. They are connected via a hallway to my bedroom on the bottom, which has two window on the opposite side of the building. The wind has the slightest tendency to blow down that Y so I have the air move in that direction.

The only wrinkle is that even with two fans in that hallway to bring the air in, there's still 3 temp difference between the top and the bottom, it gets to 1 if I flip one of those bottom fans to bring air in.

But I also have windows that open horizontally, so I have plenty of open air above the windows that I occupy with venetian blinds, so I could probably do a better job of sealing that up to improve flow and decrease backwash.

  • Your argument is morally and intellectually weak.

What is the difference between murdering civilians to "stoke resistance" and murdering civilians to "coerce civilians into complying with your demands out of fear"? In both cases you are using violence to influence behavior and the difference is you are childishly imagining "fear" isn't an emotion when bombs are dropping out of the sky randomly killing people.

How I know your thinking is soft-headed: you mention Trump's bombing of Venezuelan boats, but not Iranian cities.

  • nah, that's fine because it's obvious; be sneaky, be selective.

  • yeah, they used to feed the grizzly bears scraps at yellowstone to bleachers filled with tourists

  • Earendil-1. Nice see a Tolkien reference that doesn't blatantly advertise how evil the product is.

  • If this was part of a plan to get off fossil fuels completely, it would be pretty cool.

  • Can anyone recommend a movie or tv show or book that demonstrates how deeply fucking WEIRD the past was?

Usually, the past is basically just like today, but with funny clothes.

  • People wouldn't lie to me to just make a quick buck, would they?

  • He's more straight news:

WASHINGTON—Relieved that their colleague appeared to be the very same man they’d known for years, allies of Sen. Mitch McConnell told reporters Friday they had recently met with the seven-term Kentucky Republican inside a body bag. “Like so many Americans, we had our concerns about Mitch, but when the technician unzipped that vinyl pouch and let me crawl in next to him, I knew there was nothing to worry about,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, noting that McConnell was quiet and appeared contemplative throughout the visit as leading Republican lawmakers shared the latest news from Capitol Hill. “No, he wasn’t running his mouth and waving his arms around, but that’s because he’s always been more of a subtle tactician. When they reinserted him into cold storage, I was more confident than ever that he’d help us retain our majority in the Senate. Seeing him motionless for 90 minutes the way we’re used to really lifted our spirits, and I for one was glad to feel so silly about my anxiety.” Thune added that he couldn’t help but smile when McConnell’s rigid hand shattered as he shook it, just like always.

  • I was just reading a summary from a book published in 2016 that talks about this:

Chapter 2, "Why the Technological System Will Destroy Itself", develops the author’s theory of "self-propagating systems"—systems that compete against each other for power without any regard for the long-term consequences, since any self-propagating systems that take the long-term into account will lose their competitive edge and be out-competed by self-propagating systems that do not. Kaczynski ultimately argues that since the technological system itself is a self-propagating system composed of self-propagating subsystems that competes for power in the short-term without regard for the long-term negative consequences, that the logical conclusion of the continued growth of the technological system is the complete destruction of the biosphere, wiping out all complex lifeforms.
