  • What is the most confusing misnomer you've seen?

  • So aster means star and asteroid means star-like, right? I get that they're not stars, but lumps of stone and ice, but they burn when they pass by and appear to us as shooting stars, so star-like.

    Or am I thinking of meteorites?And what's the deal with planets? That they're not planar?

    Soccer as a term was adopted in North America

    except for Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, Belize...

    At this point it's easier to say "was adopted by the USA and Canada".

  • I think so. I know at the robotics lab in my uni they had lots of those mini qr codes on the walls.

    Iirc there was something about a self steering trailer that looked at a grid of four of those codes on the leading vehicle.

  • A youth was at a protest against mandatory military service and held a sign "Merz lick balls". Merz being our chancellor.

    He then was put under police investigation for this. This again sparked outrage online and irl, lots of memes, songs and many google map entries for CDU (Merz's party) installations being called "egghouse". Egg because in german the slang for testicles is eggs, not nuts or balls.

  • I've never been to a US hardware shop, so I don't know what all of youses tapes look like. If I can be honest, when an American talks about minutes, I sometimes stop myself and think "do they use the same minutes as the rest of the world?"

    Maybe that's why it's surprising.

  • Mucki said in winter.To your second point, if I can deduce by the feddit.org that Mucki is in Germany, the winter outside temp will swing between -5° and +10°. The isolation of the fridge might be enough. But I sometimes put a stew or soup just outside on the balcony without a fridge.
